Valles Marineris: The Grand Canyon of Mars
Credit: Viking Project,
Explanation: The largest canyon in the Solar System cuts a wide swath across the face of Mars. Named Valles Marineris, the grand valley extends over 3,000 kilometers long, spans as much as 600 kilometers across, and delves as much as 8 kilometers deep. By comparison, the Earth's Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA is 800 kilometers long, 30 kilometers across, and 1.8 kilometers deep. The origin of the Valles Marineris remains unknown, although a leading hypothesis holds that it started as a crack billions of years ago as the planet cooled. Recently, several geologic processes have been identified in the canyon. The above mosaic was created from over 100 images of Mars taken by Viking Orbiters in the 1970s.

that one is bloody amazing! makes ay wish there was a deffinate answer to what or how that was created, what interested me even more in the large one was the bottom right hand edge, anyone else notice that?
i want to see picks of that an a description now 
whats the bottom one paco?

The bottom one's just one I found without descriptions. I'd assume it's alaska or canada.

mars will be closest to us in our lifetimes this wednesday. check it out to the south east sky if it's clear for ya. should look like a bright ass star to the naked eye

The general mass of high school dropouts and social rejects on this board wouldn't appreciate a good quote if it dropped right into their lap anyway. well the potd has been around alot longer then the qotd has as well and at first it didnt seem all that popluar, but paco kept with it and fans of what he was doing (such as myself) encouraged it
the qotd has been pretty popular considering it short length but a major flaw in its actractiveness to people on this board is you always seem to pick quotes that develope into the same old pollitical arguements and that gets boring and mundane after a while or stirs up old controvercial arguements on peoples views and opinions and ends up being a c**k fight.
/shrug just my opinion on the comparisons of the two.
i personally have always had an interest in science and astrology is something ive always found wonderous and facinating, so i constantly look forward to these new threads.
stating my opinions on the qotd just leaves room for the idiots with a hard on for me to come chasing me around with it and i dont like that much so i tend to read the quote read people responses and not bother responding and adding to the pot.
but i think they are still both great threads and hope you both keep up with them persistantly and ill keep trying to find an admin who actually will answer me about getting the two sticky posts here in general...
one "...of the day" thread for the potd qotd and stupid customer of the day type posts and one thread for public toilet.
anyway late night/early morning ramblings are fun, k thnx b-bye! yadda dadda rawr RAWR!
