that would not be a TV, that would be a piece of crap
as stupid as it sounds, if you're buying a lower end item at like Best Buy or something, spend the $19.99 to get replacement coverage on it. Makes it easier to take care of it the thing blows up.
We're probably buying a refridgerator this week. They've got the Samsung I've been looking at for a long time, on sale as an open box special. Original price on it is $1200, we can get it for $500. Yes I will be buying the full warrentee on it. I think at that price it's about $40. That's just the replacement coverage, not the service plan.
When you're spending a chunk of cash, get the best you can for what your budget will allow. Pretty basic idea there, but you'd be amazed at how many people just want things cheap. Problem is they pay for it in the long run

Avi,
I have been looking also, we just bought a new house and I wanted to get a HDTV. So I have been looking at a ton of stuff and I think I am going to get one of the new JVC LCoS ones. It has the new 1080p format, and they are supposed to be able to accept the 1080p signal, where as 90% of the 1080p HDTVs out now do not accept, just upconvert the signal.
Sony has one out now that supposedly is the best HDTV out there, even better than the plasmas some people are saying, but they have had some problems with them. The Sony does not accept the 1080p signal, just upconverts it.
HP is also offering one, and it accepts the 1080p also.
The Samsungs accept a 1080p signal through a cpu compatable port, but not the hdmi hdtv one.
I am gonna wait and see how the JVC is on launch, the 56 inch ones I think are out, and the 61/70 inch models are due out any time. The Sony models are out now and the 60 inch should fall under your 5k, just make sure to pick a place with a good return policy just in case.
The 1080p signal is what the new playstation will output, and will be what you need to take full advantage of the blu-ray or hd-dvd stuff. I think I read that CBS wants to convert its broadcast to 1080p in 2006 and be the first to do so. 1080p probably wont be used by most people for 3-5 years, but I know you like all that tech stuff, so might as well get a tv that will be able to do all the stuff you want to do.
Edit: The Sony 60in lists at $4995, and the 50in lists at $3995.
Link for JVC 56in lower price as a avs forum member: $3195

all $ in US.
Noticed they had the 61" and 70" on the link site also, they are $3495 and $4595 discounted
