If I decide to become a pirate in Eve Online, what should I pay special attention to? I know that this is a risky business and I want to be as much prepared as I can be. I want to know all there is to know about pirating in Eve Online in theory before I go on to be a practical pirate as well.

Pirating in Eve Online is something that can be very rewarding, but it is also something that you must not get yourself very easily in. I think that you should think some more about this before you get to collect any theoretical knowledge about it. There is a highly developed black market in this game and that is your primary source of information. Look into this and you will se things much more clearly, then you are seeing right now. I think that you need to ask some people who are already doing it and they will be the best persons to give you any additional info.

You need to pay special attention to you wallet. Piracy is no fun when you're broke all the time. Sometimes this means engaging less-risky targets to make the ISK you need.
You also need to pay attention to your skills. Try to maximize your effectiveness and not waste any skill points in skills you dont really use. If you want to mine for example, create or buy a mining character, don't cross-train.
You also need to pay attention to the locals in low sec. Eventually you will learn who is dangerous and better avoided, and who makes a juicy target. You might notice for example a new corporation moving out to low sec so you can come and prey on them. Or you might notice certain supply lines running, which means a lot of haulers that can be camped and killed.

Unless your going to run multiple accounts I disagree on the cross training. In order to train up a second character the first one will stop training so if you invest early in learnign skills it will take less time to cross train than to train up a second character. That being said I know a lot of people who run multiple accounts for that very reason and mining with a pirate character can be extra risky as mining ships are targets and you will be making enemies as a pirate.
