Hepl, I'm in pain!
At least once every other week, I wake up with the most godawful stiff neck that won't go away for 4 days. This means that nearly half the time my neck is messed up!
It's super bad today, I can't even move my head to the left at all without turning my entire torso. In fact, my left arm doesn't have full mobility either, it hurts like hell to move it above my head. This blows lol.
Yes, I know I'm getting old ( ), but any ideas here? All I've got now is the standard $7.99 blah pillow from Target, I could use something a bit gentler I suppose. Or is this the end?!?

If this is really an issue then consult a chiropractor. No one of this board can diagnose you.

Anybody here is just as qualified as a chiropractor.

My father has the same problem (although he's 25 years older than me, so...) and was told to 'sleep correctly.'
That's great advice, but I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm sleeping.

The foam pillows can be cool, but I could never get use to sleeping with one. A good feather pillow works almost as well and is easier to sleep with. You gotta spend money on a good pillow regardless of the type you choose though. I think I shelled out about $70 for my pillow but it's lasted over five years now (just replace the cover once a year for about $5).
Also, cool air blowing on you will really increase neck pain. My acupuncturist friend came over and fixed me up after weeks of bad neck pain in the morning- he spotted the vent over my bed and had me divert the air away (simple plastic vent cover that keeps the air from blowing right down on you) and it made a HUGE difference. Check your AC vent - and turn off the ceiling fan if you use one. Get a small fan and point it away from you to keep air circulating without blowing directly on you if you need it.

Unless I use two pillows when I sleep I get the same problem.
Try that?

Hey, I'm actually learning something here!
I'm guilty as charged with the fan blowing at me (oscillates). Never ever would've thought of that.
I have tried the two pillow trick, somehow I always end up losing one. Somtimes on the floor, sometimes just off to the side.

I always wake up with a hacking cough in the morning. I have a ceiling fan that is constantly turning on the lowest setting, wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Try sleeping without a pillow. When I get a stiff neck, I alternate for a few days. Sleep on your stomach, or get a sleeping bag and sleep on the floor.

Now I buy a pack every other day. |

I was in an accident in May and my neck is still fuxored. I have to sleep with a feather pillow or nothing. If I don't I can hardly turn my neck and get headaches and radiating neck pain as well.
Stretch your neck in the morning when you get like this when you wake up. The foam pillows are neat because astronauts use them! But I couldn't sleep on one, it felt like my head was on a nerf football.
The other thing that helps me are these two things my massage therapist recommended: two oriental linaments called Kwan Loong oil or zheng gu shui which is more of a linament than an oil. Kwan loong is a cold therapy and smells better than the zheng(which is hot) but wow they help ease the tension. I pick these up at an oriental market/grocery store.

SOBAKAWA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats all you need.
This is the best f*****g pillow ever invented. Its filled with buckwheat hulls or some shit like that. That makes it very form fitting and solid, but not hard. It ended my neck pain in one night. It also doesn't get hot like normal pillows and foam does, it stays cool and the air circulates around the filling. I own 3, one big one and 2 small ones. I have left 3 others in hotels/motels across the country being I take one with me when I travel and end up forgetting it.
It also is EXCELLENT for pillow fights, my son found that out one day. He slammed the old man on the noggin one day with no warning so I was forced to retaliate with the dreaded SOBAKAWA!!!!!!!! It hits like a sledge hammer and I leveled him with one shot to the face, he was surprised to say the least:) It also helps to scream SOBAKAWA!!! when you attack, it scares the target and causes them to make tactical mistakes.

Yea, I have had a fan on me every night since I was a kid, and I don't have a problem with a sore neck. It does dry out your mouth and sinuses sometimes though. Last time I woke up with my back hurting was because I was totally exhausted, got 3 hours of sleep the night before, drank 4 beers before bed, and just flat passed out.
