My experience with inkjets is that reliability is more important than anything. Not in the sense of how many years it lasts, but how easily the nozzles get clogged and how well it prints if you haven't used it for awhile. Compared to that, technical specs mean almost nothing. They all look great in the store, and as long as you keep using them constantly.
My specific printers lately were a Lexmark (crap), and an Epson (pretty decent). The Epson seems to do a much more thorough warmup when you turn it on. The Lexmark cartridges were cheaper to replace, but I was always throwing them away 3/4 full because they were clogged and leaving streaky lines in my prints.
You could also get a printer specifically designed for photos instead of a general purpose printer. At least that would save you from swapping to the "photo" ink cartridge which is annoying.
