Did anyone else watch this game yesterday? Panthers won, and believe me I love my panthers but that was the worst game I have seen in years.

Fumbles, back-to-back interceptions, sacks, incomplete passes from both teams. It just didnt stop the whole entire game. It was like they were tryign to out-do each other on who could play the crappiest game. I have never seen a football game played poorer than what I saw yesterday. Hey at least carolina came out on top but good lord, they are going to have to play better than that if they want a shot at all this year.

It's the Lions.. they find a way to lose every time regardless of who they play. =)

I was @ the game. We were saying the same thing. It was as tho each QB was trying to outdo the other in terms of how bad they could be....

The boos were loud as hell. Don't know if that could be heard on TV or not tho.

I'm tempted to just get rid of the rest of my tix for the season...

Lions once again redefine awful

PUBLISHED: October 17, 2005

As a notorious glass-half-full kind of guy, I'm here to tell you why it's actually a good thing that the Lions so far this season have displayed lousy quarterbacking, horrible pass protection, deplorable run blocking, excruciating pass-catching skills and appalling running capability.

Because it is almost impossible for a group of NFL professionals to be so mind-numbingly ghastly with such thorough consistency and dogged reliability for as protracted a period of time as the Lions have been through five weeks of the 2005 season.

That's why.

Better days are ahead because ... well, worse days are impossible to fathom. How could they possibly sustain such stupendous ineptitude over the course of an entire season?

I'm not sure I'm up to the challenge of adequately demonstrating just how dreadful Steve Mariucci's offense was in Sunday's 21-20 last-minute loss to Carolina. (I'm not sure I can keep coming up with fresh synonyms for awful, either.) But let's give it our Sunday best.

If not for an 86-yard catch-and-run by Marcus Pollard midway through the fourth quarter -- a play that, strangely enough, began a series of events that ensured the Lions would lose the game -- Joey Harrington's leading receivers Sunday would have been Mike Williams and Ken Lucas, both with 27 yards.

One problem with that: Ken Lucas plays for Carolina. He ran 27 yards with a Harrington pass.

Even bigger problem: Three Lions defenders accounted for more yards individually than any offensive player but Pollard.

Terrence Holt picked up a fumble and ran it back 32 yards to Carolina's 34, but Harrington's offense got nothing out of it. Later, Boss Bailey and Kenoy Kennedy would produce touchdowns off interception returns of 34 and 64 yards. Those three defensive plays accounted for 136 yards; take away Pollard's 86-yarder and the Lions' offense produced 123 yards in its 51 other plays.

Whoever said the best offense is a good defense surely never had this in mind.

Pollard, however, made the fatal mistake of allowing himself to be tackled at the 5-yard line. The Lions' offense then promptly went into reverse, settling for a Jason Hanson field goal with 5:08 left to give them a six-point lead.

You can guess what happened then.

"I felt like I had to get it in," Pollard said. "Hindsight is 20-20" -- or maybe he was talking about the Lions' rushing and passing totals, 20 and 20 -- "but I should have got it in. Looking back, it would have been very important for me to get it in."

That opened the door for Carolina to pull out the win despite losing quarterback Jake Delhomme when Kennedy knocked him silly -- incurring a 15-yard penalty -- on what became the game-winning drive, orchestrated by Chris Weinke, of all people, and 37-year-old receiver Ricky Proehl.

That wasn't exactly Montana and Rice carving up the Lions. So let's not go all gooey over the defense. Nice game -- until it mattered.

Weinke hadn't thrown a pass since 2002 and Proehl had to be coaxed into reconsidering his decision to retire before the season. Yet in nine plays starting at Detroit's 48, Weinke went 5 of 7 for 47 yards, the last six attempts intended for Proehl, four of them completions, including a 3-yard touchdown feathered over R.W. McQuarters.

"It's called guys stepping up and making plays," Lions guard Damien Woody snarled. In what Mariucci described as a "frustrated locker room," nobody's frustration bubbled over quite like that of Woody.

"That's all it is. It's football. We've been playing it all our lives. It's a simple game. That's what I've been telling guys. The game is simple. It's not rocket science."

Forgive Woody. He played with two Super Bowl winners in New England, where Charlie Weis was devising plays and Tom Brady was fulfilling his vision. They made it look sublimely simple. Every defense exposes itself somewhere. Weis and Brady were masters at exploiting those soft spots.

Carolina had a big soft spot Sunday. The Panthers blitzed aggressively, often sending safeties and loading up one side or the other. Good offenses salivate when defenses take that degree of risk. The Lions made Carolina pay exactly once -- the Pollard play.

"They were blitzing," Woody said. "(Saying) 'you're going to have to beat us up top.' Just like last week. And I guarantee you, Cleveland is going to do it next week and Chicago, too. This is a copycat league."

OK, sure, the Lions were hampered without the suspended Charles Rogers and the injured Roy Williams at wide receiver, but they weren't exactly bereft with No. 1 pick Mike Williams and Kevin Johnson available. And it wouldn't have mattered who was available on most plays because on the rare occasions Harrington wasn't ducking for cover he was again looking like an overwhelmed rookie instead of a fourth-year pro with a fat contract.

Somebody asked Woody if he thought the Lions' offense scared anyone.

"Why should we?" he said disgustedly. "Does that out there look like it should scare anyone? Why should we? What the solution is, I don't know. Hard work. I'll give the company answer. Hard work."

But let's end with a glass-half-full observation: Hey, they're still in first place, and no one in the NFC North is going to run away from them anytime soon. The next four games are against Cleveland, Chicago, Minnesota and Arizona, one train wreck of a team after another.

Given the improbability that even the Lions can sustain their level of -- choose one -- lousy, horrible, deplorable, excruciating, appalling, ghastly, inept, awful football for the duration of an NFL season, a great leap forward to mediocrity should be enough to get them to the playoffs. Better days are ahead. How can they not be?

I was at the game, the Fans were going crazy. By the 2nd half everytime Joey came on the field they boo'd him. By the 4th quater they were chanting "Joey sucks" hah, was pretty funny.

I think Dre Bly said it best after the game in a interview, "I guess we are going to have to dress up and play offense to".

This is Lion football at its finest. I have watched this team do this shit for almost 30 f*****g years. Not only do they lose, but they do so in the most destructive fashion possible most times.

This franchise is so bad that it made the best running back off all time quit playing.

From what I can tell this year, it seems like the pressure had gotten to Harrington, he doesn't look confident in the pocket at all anymore. It may be a matter of time until we see Garcia in there doing a worse job.

In all fairness Roy Williams was out, and KJ had like what 10 carries? How bout some dedication to the run!!

This offense just needs to play consistently and the defense can take care of the rest. I hope mooch can figure that much out.

This situation kinda reminds me when Cheveldae (sp) took over as goaltender for the wings. Eventually he lost confidence and lost the job, and unless something changes the same will happen here.
