Posted: 09/18/03 - 13:07 Post subject: Outfitting my basement
|
|
|
I'm moving into my new house (House before carpet) and i'm configuring the basement for entertaining friends. I just put in new carpeting and i'm trying to decide what amenities i want to buy for it.
The basement is configured as a laundry room, a main area, a smaller room, a closet, and a bathroom.
I'm leaving the laundry room alone for now, but i thought about knocking down the wall between the main area and the smaller room. The main area has roughly 13ftx12ft open area and lots of other space that's used for the bar, walkway, and doorways/stairs. Inside that 13ftx12ft area i'm putting the living room furniture (1 couch, 2 chairs, coffee table, 2 lamp tables, and a 32" tv). In the main area, in front of the doorway to the smaller room, theres about 72in x 72in space that could be used for something. I have to leave some clearance for the walkway to the smaller room, but i figure 18in would be enough. The secondary room has about 11ftx11ft area inside it, and so far i'm putting the dining room set from the upstairs down there and i have an area of about 60inx66in in that room in the corner for adding stuff.
Things im considering buying: A pachinko machine, a pool table, a foosball table, a kegerator.
I've got $1000 bucks to spend. I already bought a neon bass ale sign:
for $150
The foosball table is looking real good at about $350 bucks. it's roughly 56"L x 50"W with the handles extended. You need about 16in extra width on the side to allow for the players. I'm not sure where to put it though because it's a tight fit in both the smaller room and the walkway.
The pool table i've pretty much ruled out. It's just too big for the main area (even without any furniture) and it's pretty expensive. I could knock down the wall between the main area and the small room and i would have sufficient space, but it's quite a project since i'd need the carpet redone and the wall must exists as a gateway (cut away most of the wall but leave an outlining 8in wall+ceil+pole perimeter because the ceilings don't match in both rooms.)
Pachinko: This machine is f*****g cool. I think i'd mount it on a wall if i buy it. Price $260 shipped.
Last but not least, i wanted a kegerator. I think it would be pretty damn cool to have tap beer (especially bass ale) in my basement. I would probably have to buy one ($650) or build one ($200 freezer + $250 parts). I think it would go well with my bar.
I'm trying to figure out what to do. Ideas? What do you think you'd prefer if you were in my situation?

I plan too. I'm taking one of my machines and i'm going to make a jukebox out of it. I'm taking the third bedroom upstairs and making an office with a few computers. I'm going wireless for the laptop in the living room.

Dartboard is a great idea, that's almost like bonus entertainment as it takes up no space.
I'll always have a soft spot for bumper pool tables because they're fun, smaller, and versatile.
I've had family that tried the arcade machine approach (classics mostly, like Pac-Man, Gauntlet, etc.) and it seems they stay fun for only so long. I could get lost on an electronic Blackjack, Poker bar machine though.
Just ideas...

My gf's mom is selling her city house. I was helping her out with some stuff and discovered that she has a huge unfinished basement. Literally 3 bedrooms/2 baths, 1500+ sq ft of unfinished space downstairs. That p****d me off...very much. Basements are one of the coolest things. Don't waste it compusmack....don't waste it.

f**k yeah. She makes money so she pays to live here. I've been with her for two years and odds are we'll end up married eventually. She's not really against it (paying rent) because the money goes into the house, etc.

If you go with a good soft tip board (arachnid) they will hold up just as well as a steel tip board. I use both but play more soft tip than I do steel tip because it does not do as much damage to my house.
There are some awesome boards out there if you have money to spend. 250 bucks though will get you almost anything you want.
If you go steel tip make sure you get a bristle board. They will hold up for years longer than a cork board.
