How do you expect them to balance out melee combat vs. ranged combat, and still maintain a sufficient degree of realism? In the RW, melee is vastly inferior to ranged (meaning firearms) in most if not all situations. In the world of FE, your character using a baseball bat is to be given a fair chance of surviving an encounter with someone wielding a shotgun. How do they do it, without becoming ridicules?

This has been debated over and over again for quite some time. The bottom line is, we can't be sure yet. Me, I'm with the folks betting on the environment effect: In enclosed spaces, especially if something is messing with your aim (darkness, weather), your rifleman will actually be at a clear disadvantage when faced with my baseball bat wielder.
