Besides the heavy physical requirements for being a firefighter what sort of background check can I expect during the application process? I don't have a criminal record and I don't have much of a driving record, do they do psychological tests and shit for firefighters? I know cops undergo all sorts of tests but they're law enforcement, I think it's a bit heavier for law enforcement.
I've applied for the 2005 recruitment process, but I only have a limited idea of what expect. Any firefighters here?

its not that bad. im in the fire fighter program, psycholigcaly im not sure. but ya there is a huge physical test to it.

What are the physical requirements for you? The details are non-existant in the SFFD site and I don't know any firefighters myself.

A good friend is a rookie firefighter in the Denver FD.
He had to pass a physical test and have some psychological testing before he was accepted.
The physical one was pretty rough, and you have to continually retrain. I remember him having to do a timed drill carrying an empty hose, and one with a hose charged with water, and drag a 100+ lb dummy like 100 feet, etc. They also have a test for climbing stairs with and without gear. After a 4 month academy he has 9 months of probation, and then a certification test written at the 1 year mark. How some of those fat guys I see as firemen make it I dunno.
He's a 38 year old probie

To be honest Nah, you might have problems, even in San Fran... It is a very elitist atmosphere. My gf's Sisters boyfriend gets shit on just because he is a tad on the heavy side.

Aye, I realize that. And I honestly expect nothing less. I'm not going into it for being a cool social venue, I'm going into it because I feel it's something I want to do. I don't expect the trials to be even remotely easy and I'm mentally and physically in the process of preparing for them.

It's a lot of fun. I was doing volunteer work where I live for a little bit up until I moved and got a new job. It's something that's deffinatly worth trying. Go down to a station and talk to a chief.
Ask them what it takes to become a fire fighter in that area. The rest is your attitude towards it. It's dirty, hot and laborous, but... it's rewarding all the same.
Give 'em hell, man.

A lot of the big city departments do cival service testing like any other type city job but you are awarded extra points for having certifications such as paramedic, or already having fire standards. Background checks are done of course, most areas a felony on your record will end your processing as will DUIs, reckless driving and other like moving violations. Once past that a lot of departments do the combat challenge or a modified version of it (search for combat challenge or firefighter challenge for a description).
If you get past all of this and get hired on, most people find it is the best job they could imagine. The pay isn't the greatest but it is all about the great benefits. I have been working as a paramedic since 1990 and for a fire department since 1999 and still love going to work every shift.

Good show btw if you haven't checked it out... actually a bit of talk regarding some gays in it, and those in the department. One of the main chars has a gay son who is a FF up in Boston.

Yea at least in socal they do. Have to be a paramedic for a year before you can become a firefighter.

All firefighters working here on base ( all Civilians ) are paramedics. About 3 hours south in Las Cruces i got a job offer if i chose to get out of the military. I'm already an EMT-B and was offered to work with the local EMS for 6 months and they would pay for me to become a paramedic. Not a bad deal really.

Not in San Francisco. In SF there is a H-2 Entry Level FF they are basically the grunts. They handle the machinery and are pretty low on the food chain. The H-3 FFs are paramedics and they are also the ones that are allowed to drive the trucks.
You could go get your certification for Paramedic, but from what I understand, it's easier to get your paramedic training while an H-2 grunt since the selection process for H-3 is about 3 times more exclusive.
