Even going by the population vs medals ratio, America is outdoing itself this time around. Im impressed. Paul Hamm, Michael Phelps and Carly Patterson for the win!

You know to really can't gauge medals vs population alone. You need to also factor in the amount of funding dedicated to sport and the backing from the general population of the country.

Didn't australia dominate the mens 200m freestyle?
All the funds they had was tossing a crock into the pool to get a little extra speed out of their athletes

The crocs are cheap. The money went into funding Steve Irwin who was in a dingy behind the crocs holding his daugher who was poking the crocs with a stick to see what would happen.

Don't forget 300 years of selective breeding.
There are no 6'8" 420 lb black body guards in africa. They are a dime a dozen in NYC.

Only for a few generations, in 100 years or so the benefits should start to dissipate.

mens gymnastics, women's soccer, swimming, fencing? What's strange to me is that we're dominating in sports that are severely lacking funding, being cut drastically at the high school/college level (mostly men's due to title IX), and are only popular during the Olympics (how many other times have you actually watched professional swimming? -unless you're like me in a family thats active in the sport.. but i really dont know many other people who keep up with it). And then in Basketball, for example- where we have TONS of funding, and TONS of backing from the general population- we're sucking (though to basketball's defense, we can do better).
Swimming by your definition would be the biggest surprise of them all (particularly mens.. which right now we are doing an AMAZING job in )- consider that in Australia swimmers are treated like top-of-the-line celebrities, yet in the USA many colleges are either cutting funding or getting rid of the sport entirely. Even in the past few years its been happening a lot. I know when my brother was swimming for Penn State there was actually scholarship money out there for swimmers, but its been dwindling recently- on top of losing popularity.
Anyway, I'm really hoping that there will be a boost in popularity of all of these sports after the Olympics, because our country has a ton of talent in them .

The US is probably one of the few countries where women's soccer is more popular than men's.

you're absolutely correct, but also remember that it doesnt get nearly as much funding/popularity as football/basketball get

China is really coming on today, though. Just one medal behind the US as I write this.
Swimming, track, soccer, fencing, etc. don't get much attention in the US, but where we really take gas is in the events that get no funding whatsoever. Table tennis? Archery? Trampoline? Badminton? We blow, and China is awesome lol.
It's kind of strange, the games we Americans like to play (billiards, bowling, darts, golf, football, etc.) are nowhere to be seen in the Olympics, and we're stuck competing in events most of us don't give two s***s about.
If we were truly all about medals, I'm sure we'd be pulling a China and force our youngsters to play table tennis. Instead, we just do what's fun for us, and still come up pretty strong in the Olympics.
(but honestly, in another 20 years a dominating China is going to be all over the Olympics.)

The Olympics are not fair.
Every Mexican that can run, jump or swim lives in America.

I'm fairly impressed with our performance so far. I didn't have any idea until the olympics started that our teams were so good this year.
