To be honest I never liked the idea that proffesionals that get paid millions are allowed to be in the Olympics.

The olympics are falling into the commercialism that most sports have already whored out to. I gave up giving a crap about any olympic sport that professionals compete in, which is almost all of them now.

Ehhh to me its iffy, I think it should be the absolute best for each sport regardless of what they do back here, weather its a pizza man or center for the bulls. If your the best you should be there. Do other countries not take their best and put them into training camps to prefect their skills? How is that much different then being a professional here.

you have to understand something... not everybody that should be on the usa b ball team is on. a lot of older guys that are good are not on there because they don't wanna get hurt. anyhow yes, we lost to italy but it's preseason olympics. hopefully we will get it together ..

Yes, they do - as far as I know that's why we allow professionals to compete now. But I think the Olympics has always been meant to represent amateur sports.
I could be totally wrong btw; I didn't research it, that's just what I always thought.

Whats usually the case with highly payed athletes.. They dont give it their best because that could mean higher chance of injury wich means they loose hundreds and thousands of dollars.
Olympics should be more about honor and give it your f*****g best, f*****g athletes who are highly overpaid should stay the f**k out of the olympics. imho

When in the hell do the summer Olympics even start? I haven't heard shit about 'em besides the basketball team drama and security issues!
Give me the winter games over summer any day of the week (although the NHL is doing it's best to ruin those too!)

16th-27th at least... those are the days we have to pay attention to here at work because they affect our content those two weeks. So assume at least the 14th-29th probably.

I don't understand why professionals can't compete in the Olympics? It's supposed to be about who's best in the world isn't it?

Yeah, too bad that in the original Olympics the participants were all highly trained professional athletes, and it was extremely rare for amateurs to compete...I mean that would be against the values of the Olympics...how did the ancient Greeks dare go against the set of rules set up by the Victorian system in AD1896?!?!?!?! Oh the humanity!

The American team has all around great players and superstars like Duncan and Iverson but hadn't got any time to prepare properly for the Olympics and become a real team. Their defense seems that it sucks and also they'll have problems playing against a zone defense that almost all of the teams are going to employ against them. Italy isn't really the best team around, they finished third with the same team in the last Eurobasket with a *lot* of luck. In Athens, there'll be a number of good teams with a hard-on to beat Americans like Lithuania, Serbia, Greece, Spain etc. that have their eye on the gold too.
