get one of those learn spanish CDs and play it on your computer. That way you go at your own pace, can HEAR it, and sometimes they have games in them.

Got any Latin or Spanish friends? You will need to learn the grammar in order to learn the proper conjugations and ways of saying stuff. The reason being, romantic languages are not linear like English; the words in a sentence are not in the same order as in English. The best way to learn a language is by speaking a lot in that language.

Start molesting small Spanish children and taking notes on what they say. Compare notes to what is said by English speaking children when you get them.
There ya go. Some real world Spanish!

Nope, all my latin friends have long since moved. I wasn't clear enough in my original post. I understand that learning the proper conjugations is necessary. However from what I've been told in the past, the type of Spanish they teach in highschool (redundant since I'm long out) isn't very practical in the real world.

nah, that doesn't work. All you learn is "help!", "no means no!" and "is that all you've got?"

Damn. Sorry Juky-Poo. I tried to help. Maybe you should expand your horizons and not only molest children. Hit some of the gay bars and maybe pick up a few hookers.

I'm pretty sure the military uses it. But they also stick people in a camp with other students and only allow them to speak the language that they are studying, in order to learn it quicker.

They use proper grammatical crap in everyday speech you twit. If you ran around saying "I is smart" people would think you were mentally subnormal (and/or just plain f****d up in the head).

Haha, nice. Kids, help me hide this p********e's body before the police arrive.
One of my brother's friends learned it perfect in like 3 months staying in Puerto Rico. Another kid that was bilingual that he knew taught him. Yea, only speaking it is the best way to learn.

I was arrogant enough to think I could start spanish on my own, it really wasn't that easy. If you can't use it every day, or practise with other people it gets really hard.

Babelfish sucks at translating from english to spanish. It puts the words in almost the exact order as the english language which for proper spanish is incorrect. Also, it's not good at tenses.

Ok I've come to two conclusions. First the people who told me high school spanish was worthless were idiots, and secondly that Silvermouse should have been born latin instead of Azian so we could speak spanish together.

It's only "worthless" because they teach you European Spanish as opposed to American Spanish because the latter is not considered "proper". It's so utterly stupid but there you have it.
As for how to learn. Rosetta Stone is highly recommended. I've never used it but I have only heard good things about it for the most part. You have to practice a lot. I'm going to say it again for the sake of emphasis. You need to practice a lot.
Spanish is easy as f**k. Not only because I speak it, from a linguistic perspective it's very, very straightforward.
- There are only 5 vowels and better yet, only 5 vowel sounds. "A" will always be "ah", "E" will always be "eh", "O" will always be "oh-" No long/short vowels.
- Only 2 silent letters and rules for differing consonant sounds are constant (to the best of my knowledge).
- No words like "plough" and "dough" and no "tail/tale" problems.
- No contractions unless using colloquial.
- Only 3 rules of accentuation and all 3 become intuitive after applying them for a few months.
- The only sound that doesn't exist in English is a trilled "R" and that's not so hard to get around.
- Spanish is FULL of English cognates, you will not have a hard time deciphering many words once you get the pronunciation down.
- Same tenses as English but with a straightforward Latin-derived tense declensions, not like English which is has tenses..... God only knows where some of them came from because it certainly isn't Latin.
- Reflexive verbs may pose a little bit of a problem conceptually but you'll get over it
- No neuter nouns. All nouns are masculine/feminine. This may be a problem at first but all nouns have an article and you should be able to get over it relatively quickly.
My tips to you. (It worked for me learning Russian)
- Talk to yourself in that language. - Say good morning to yourself if that's all you know but say it. Listen to yourself say it. Make your mouth accustomed to making the sounds like the flapped R and the trilled R. Make it become second nature, intersperse it with English.
- Watch TV in the language. Don't sit there and watch it, you will never follow along 100%. Rather, turn the TV up a bit (if spouse/kids allow) and go about your daily routine at home. You will pick up intonation patterns subconsciously, sort of how a baby picks up languages. ( I digress, but it p****s me off to hear people say they don't have the same capacity as children to learn new languages. All they lack is a child's inability to resist learning a new language, your capacity is always the same )
- Talk to your friends in that language. If you don't have any friends that speak it, make some. This may or may not be an option, it's a great resource tho, probably the single best.
- Don't be afraid to learn colloquial. Just understand it's colloquial. Apply the same usage rules that you would use in English. It's not brain surgery, just requires some amount of moderation.
- DON'T ROUND OUT YOUR f*****g VOWELS !!! This is probably my single biggest pet peeve of people learning the language. This is why it's SO important to practice to yourself where you aren't fearful of being ridiculed by others. Don't anglicize your vowels it's a horrible, awful, dirty habit to get into and it's an impossible one to break once you do. Train your brain to not do this. Ever.
- PM me if you have any more questions, or post here
There are tons more I could impart on you, this is all I can think of atm.

Try paralink.com for translations if you ever need to. It's not perfect by any means but it's leaps and bounds ahead of what babelfish is at.
