I've seen this type of shit before. One such case was a bank in like Australia while I was working for MSN. This guy couldn't get on their site while on our DSL but on our (MSN's) dial up he could. We did everything and none of it worked. Even tried it on my system at home on MSN's DSL at the time. It worked fine then.
What it may be is a problem with a router somewhere within your ISP. You might find someone within a block of you who also has Verizon DSL and see if they have the same issue.
They probably go through the same DSLAM as you, same ATM path and also the same backbone connection. Take your friends same laptop to their house, hook up to it and see if CNN will work then.
If it does, call Verizon back and say "I can't get to these sites, my connection to them dies on step x in a tracert, it happens on multiple computers on my connection but if those same computers are taken to another location with your service they work fine. They also work on dial up, which tells me that it's either my DSL modem (which I doubt because the tracert gets past that and stops on YOUR equipment) or B it's a connection problem on your backend." Either way, it's their problem and they should fix it. If they refuse, tell them you want a supervisor, explain to the sup what you have done so that they didn't have to do their jobs and help you with most of your internet problem, but you've hit a point where it's a problem on their end, it needs fixed, if it's not you can find a different provider that isn't going to block you from these sites.
Just remember to keep everything ready to tell them:
Oh it's your computer: It happens on several computers
Oh it's CNN's problem: Amazingly CNN is having a problem with my house only. Works fine next door (or where ever you test it).
Now there does come a point where it's a waste to fix it. More than likely what they'll do is try to send you a new DSL modem/router which I can almost guarantee won't work, or two they'll rebuild you on the ATM which MIGHT work. In the end though it would probably take deprovisioning your DSL line and reprovisioning it, putting you in downtime for 2-3 weeks or more.
Personally... I'd just read a different news site. AIM is worthless anyways.
