How awesome is this: My roommate's last roommate was his cousin. The phonebill/internet was under his name, but when he left and I moved in, we found out that we couldn't change the phone/internet bill from his name to one of ours without having to disconnect the DSL.

Yes, that's right. They can't open a file on their computer and change his name to one of ours (keeping everything exactly the same) without physically shutting off our DSL, and thus charging us 200 bucks or whatever it is to shutoff DSL before the contract is up.

So now they're going to do that for us, but it will take 3-5 business days of no DSL (read 9 days) before they can complete the switch.

Is this a hard process? I mean, the part about changing 14 characters in a computer file and/or flipping a switch that turns DSL on and off? Is this some sort of incredible feat of engineering and computer science that we've demanded of our poor, cash-strapped phone company?

It isn't a matter of changing a name in a file, it's a huge process and you're lucky they didn't tell you to enjoy your 30 day waiting period just like everyone else.

Next time plan ahead.

Unless you have Ameritech as a phone company every other one that I work with on a daily basis will let you switch the account name, however, to do so you have to be on the phone or the person who has the account currently in their name needs to be with you when you call and they can authorize making that changes to the account. I know this from personal experience in that I had DSL under my name at my folk's place before I moved out, they wanted to keep the service so I called up Qwest and they were like no problem! Pac Bell is pretty cool about it too from what I've been told. So it sounds like you're getting f****d Sad You could always threaten them with *If you don't change the account, then I'll just move my shit to cable modem* Its a good threat that really works since most of the major telco's are really trying to do the value added services bundle now since their long distance and even local voice is being eroded by VoIP and cell phones.. I haven't had a land line in almost 2 years and I sure as f**k don't miss it =)

They're under the SBC umbrella of companies but all of them, Ameritech, Pac Bell, Southwest Bell all still operate and bill seperately from SBC atleast with New Edge where I work =)

Not my fault the lecs are all run like shit, thats why half the old bell lecs cant get shit right the first time anyways.

Did you know it's standard verizon practice to take customers down if they have another customer who needs a replacement card, and they don't have spares? They just rip one persons card and give it to another person, then they come back in 4 hours and get paid even more to fix what they broke to begin with.

f*****g union companies really f**k over their customers bad. I hate all local telco's.

You have to have a contract for DSL? What kind of crap is that? lol

Never seen an internet service that required a contract... I have a 3Mb/768Kb cable connection and have always been on a month to month plan with no deposit, plus the first 3 months were free. Why not find a provider that appreciates your business?

Well, it's the old "We'll install it, but you have to have it for 2 years without interruption or it will be 200 bucks!".

Apparantly this counts as an interruption, so we waited until the exact day that the two years were up from when they got it to do this.

Still waiting for them to shut me off. Actually, it will be a good thing. Maybe I'll actually get some writing done, or homework!!

Not always. Since cable is a shared connection it really varies based on population density. I have had both cable and dsl in my current appartment and the dsl by far blows the cable out of the water. The cable promised higher speed potential, but it just never got there.

Cable CAN be better, but not always.

Many cable co's also require you to subscribe to cable TV service if you want calbe internet. That or they want you to pay a ghastly inflated internet only monthly rate that's just a few bucks short of TV+internet. That's the way it is around here, anyway. Personally, i don't watch much TV, and really can't throw down 40-50$$ a month for it while paying another 35+ for internet anyway. Although, sometimes I wish I could just subscribe to three or four channels. Comedy Central, Cartoon Network, Sci-fi, and the History channel for about around 10 bucks a month would be awesome.

I used to say the same thing until I started working for a DSL CLEC.. in all actuallity DSL is a shared service as well. It just seems most DSL networks are built out better.

Every internet connection is shared once you get higher up anyways, that's the principle behind TCP to begin with.

What bob meant was that cable is a shared resource like a LAN, if everyone in your apartment complex is downloading at the same time, your connection is going to be absolute shit because you share a common bandiwdth pool with those people, and they are using it all.

DSL is yours all the way from the pop to your house, so the only shared point is after the telco terminates it to the isp who provides their internet backbone.

DSL is like having a dedicated line, cable is like setting up a wifi network and letting everyone on your block use it.
