Heh, this thing is pretty fun. I never played much console games since I always had games on my PC. But I won a DS with the Mario Kart game at my company xmas party last night and I haven't stopped playing with it since. It's a lot more entertaining than I expected

IMO the DS is too big for a portable, the PSP is WAY too big, costs way too much, and is a piece of shit in general. Playing movies is an interesting idea but the way they've done it - new proprietary media - is a shot in the foot. Only morons would pay $20 for a disc that will only play on their 4 inch screen, or whatever it is.

/shrug I love my PSP far more than my DS. While the DS has better games, the features of the PSP (VNCing into my home computer from work with my PSP, or having over 300 roms available at any time for instance) are far more useful to me.
Also there are a number of great PSP games now like Metal Gear Ac!d, Legend of Heroes, Burnout, and many more on the way.

Yeah in terms of games, the DS is completely blowing the PSP out of the water of late. In terms of functionality tho, I like my PSP a lot more. Having a variety of emulators and books in one portable place is nice.

That's for a hacked PSP though, isn't it?

You can hack/downgrade pretty much any PSP.

Don't need to do anything to the PSP physically, it will run homebrew on a 2.0 (kind of) or a 1.5 (much easier) and a 1.0 will run just about any unsigned code. They come out with a new firmware version about every other day and try to force it to play new games, but they all suck, so there isn't much worry there.

Yep Yep. I run 1.5 firmware and have no reason to upgrade. I can do web browsing and AVC files (Which are the two big "Reasons" to upgrade to 2.0) with the MPH Firmware Launcher and still run any homebrew I want.

Does Sony take a financial hit on each unit that they intend to recoup in game sales like Microsoft did with Xbox?

That is actually a good question that I havent thought about. I still buy games (I own like 5), but it is indeed a good question. Ill have to look into it.
