Which company do you reccomend for a nice laptop that is affordable, and not a PoS. Every site I've been to (think I went to Dell, Alienware, and HP so far) have had stupid prices, and make me buy shit like an OS, and warranty support, and a bunch of b******t I'll never use, and don't really feel like paying for. I'm looking to spend around 1400-1800 dollars, and get something that's nice, but not to nice, and I don't really feel like spending the extra 300 dollars on useless shit I'll never use. I just want the machine, but every machine on those sites comes with retarded waranties, and makes me buy an OS, when I already have like 5 xp pro licenses anyway.

I wish I could just buy the parts, and build it like a desktop Sad

the only time a manufacturer is going to let you get away with not ordering an os is maybe dell if you order through a business. they won't sell systems to consumers without windows- has to do with microsoft's licensing practices and since you can't just go and build your own laptop, you're f****d.

having said that, check out toshiba laptops... they're rock solid but you could probably get a better price through dell.

When I bought one a couple months ago I shopped around and finally went with gateway. I bought the bigass 17" widescreen with the full sized keyboard. It is great for typing on and playing games but not so nice for carrying around compared to my skinny little IBM I use at work. I mostly use it at home so I'm very happy with it, but when I do take it somewhere the weight is very noticeable and it doesn't fit into a lot of laptop cases.

i had a 17" gateway for about 2 years and the system ran great but i had major LCD bracket issues... the things kept wearing out on me, i killed the batteries (primary and secondary) within 6 months of usage and eventually my warranty ran out so i was stuck wiht 2 non-working batteries and an LCD that barely supports its own weight...

i don't want to trash gateway in general since i havn't used more than just my one laptopm, but i was not impressed.

I use a Samsung X50 Laptop:

http://www.laptopical.com/01851-samsung-x50-0123.html (specs)

Very happy with it - it runs most new games, though it has issues with EQ2. Probably because I only got it with 512mb ram and an X600 (also available with 1gb ram and an X700) - I use the desktop for gaming anyway though.

In terms of weight and size I find it very easy to move around. I thought a 15'' widescreen was way too small, but at 1680x1050 it's just fine. Some friends have bigger monitors at lower resolutions and they have way more trouble carrying it around, so I prefere small and high resolution.

One "issue" might be that in a well lit room you need to set the monitor to the highest brightness for a good picture - at that point it's perfect though. In darker rooms you can lower it so it doesn't hurt your eyes.

Comes with a DVD+RW writer, bluetooth, 802.a/b/g and a "quite" mode when you're in a public place. It'll throttle the cpu speed and seemingly turn off the fan. Even without it it's very quite, but when you don't need the processing power, might as well throttle it.

Battery power is a little weak - 2hrs on full brightness with the standard battery. I might pick up an extended one, though I usually have it plugged in anyway and there'd be a lot of power-saving options.

I had an issue with the screen aber two weeks after I bought it - as the picture went to black, images were visible for a second or so. Shipped it to the repair place and within a week I had it back with a new LCD. They also reset my warrenty, so it's one year from the day they returned it.

Samsung's a good brand, so might want to look into those. Pricing on reviews online is way off - it's around $2k, probably dropped recently too.

Don't expect it to be a gaming system though - for that you still need a desktop. No point buying a very expensive and impossible-to-upgrade laptop that is too big, heavy and loud to carry around with you.

I have an IBM T-42 that I use at work. It was great except the motherboard blew out after a year and a half. Was still under warranty though.

Dell outlet stuff is awesome. Except for servers (which I need to customize), I buy all my stuff from their outlet.

i bought my laptop because my last job i traveled and i wanted to be able to game. since i don't really travel anymore a desktop is more feasable.

its worth it if you travel or move. just realize a gaming laptop is going to weigh 13 lbs and isn't worth it if you travel daily.

And if the laptop isn't making them physically uncomfortable, it can make them emotionally uncomfortable if you have porn as your desktop and are reading about living with infectious diseases and treatments for head lice.
