That would be so bad ass if the control interface was like a vid game. Mass produce and recruit through CS/Xbox Live/any other game place with shooting.

Yes, because we need more detachment from the human consequences of war.

Confused

Leaving indoctrination (the good vs the bad) aside... no, it doesn't have to be.

Warfare has evolved from direct human contact - people killing other people with their hands or direct extensions of their hand in the form of knifes/swords/clubs - to something that's in many cases very impersonal, and from a distance (with guns and bombs).

In this era of atomic power (albeit not used) a few people in power can kill millions with a push on a button half a world away.

Over the ages people have deviced means by which they could kill people from farther and farther away.

It's worth considering what kind of effect the increased distance from death has. You kill, yet there is no blood on your hands.

Like you said: it's like a computergame. Surreal.

Well I think there will allways be casualties on at least the defensive side, even when everyone has advanced drones. How much of an impact will you have attacking someone elses drone warehouses? Your going to attack the manned bases and inflict damage and then fight the drones as they are deployed by the enemy.

But I do see what your saying with the distancing thing.

Heres a question for you then, do you think this is a better step than furthing nukes in some way? Granted these things could get outfitted with nuke warhead cores but lets pretend they wont for a while.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: War is hell. War isn't fair either. We fight to win. We fight with the attempt to keep as many of our troops alive and to kill as many of theirs as necessary until victory is achieved.

If you have any romantic ideals that war should be up close and personal, you're living in the past. They were limited by technology, not by anything else. There is no nobilty in war, only pain and suffering.

Your comments are strange, but hey, you come from a country that's lost most of it's wars. I guess time will do that to a people. Wink

I'm not trying to downplay the effect of war on humans or the way soldiers suffer. But maybe it should be that bad? Ever think of that?

Also consider this: because of technological advancement we don't need big human army's anymore, in comparison to centuries ago.
Technological advancements are the biggest reason (directly or indirectly) why virtually every country over the years has abandoned conscription and the draft for young men. Who needs soldiers if you can just drop an H-bomb, or even better, when you can just threaten to drop one? (hello cold war) You only need a plane and a couple pilots for that one.

This makes us, as a society, a lot more detached from whatever war is going on. In earlier days more people were involved if there was a war. So I have to ask: If everyone of us had a brother, husband, or a father at war, in Iraq, for instance, would there still be the same type of response to Bush? Would people still cry for a revenge (or rescue, whichever case you prefer), when they will have to suffer or make sacrifices for it? Or would they be more cautious in supporting starting a war?

Maybe yes, maybe no.

It's easy to support a war on ideological grounds, but what if you, personally, have to be involved in one way or the other?

I don't have the answers to these questions, and I think they might be different from person to person, but I think they need to be posed and thought about.

(With respect to everyone who IS directly involved in the war in Iraq, I think they and their families are very brave. It's just an interesting subject)

And Paco: I don't have romantic ideals about war, or about it being up close and personal. I don't need to put everything in 'right or wrong'-boxes to have an interesting discussions.

You are way too defensive for your own good.

Hmm, I think most things are better than nukes, in a physical sense, with all the aftereffects that atomic explosions have..

But will there be less casualties? Maybe.
Maybe not: what if war becomes more frequent because there is less to loose in human terms? Won't it have the opposite effect?

I don't really have an opinion one way or another about what the most 'efficient' way to wage war is. What I do know is that detachment from people (in war, and in other ways (students killing eachother in school for instance)) doesn't strike me as a good development.

I get tired of your replies. Because you misinterpret every word I say. You can reply all you want, but then I'll just be like:

Obviously if they provoke such a reply from me, you should perhaps work on your English composition skills ma'am. You may intend one thing, but come across totally different. I know I have the same problems in Spanish, and I get laughed at when I try. Perhaps it's you who is defensive?

Something to consider. You are not always right. Nobody is. Including me.

Paco, If I'm defensive it's because you seem to turn everything into something personal when you respond to me. My english skills are fine, I can make myself perfectly clear. Don't worry about that. Misunderstandings happen in every language. But you seem to make a sport of misunderstanding me.

I'll be uncool for a second here and be honest: It bothers me sometimes to be accused by you of things and thoughts that are the farthest from my personality and my mind, even if it's "just Realpoor". I've known you for a while, and I think I deserve a little bit more consideration from you, and maybe a tad less condescension.
