I just got EQII and wanted to find out a little bit before I commit myself to a class/race/alignment.
1) How much does your alignment (good/evil) affect your gameplay?
2) What do classes in EQII do, exactly? (I.E. Which class does the most dps, which class usually pulls, etc.)
3) whats the difference between a swashbuckler and a brigand, an assassin and a ranger, etc. (the manual makes some classes out to seem nearly identical)

1. Alignment is a large factor. Qeynos and Freeport are effectively divided so that the game contains two areas of newbie play. You will not interact with players from the opposite city until the late teens to early twenties.
It will also affect your class choice, as certain subclasses can only come from Freeport, others from Qeynos. Also, certain races are marked as good-only or evil-only. It's best to know in advance what you'd like to be at level 20, as your decision at character creation will be one you'll be living with for the duration of your character's life. There is a quest to switch cities, but this quest must be completed before achieveing level 18 and the quest is not reccomended for newbies.
Freeport and Qeynos have seperate player markets. Typically most servers have a stronger market in Qeynos, as less people choose to live in Freeport. Your shared bank will not transcend city lines, meaning you can only transfer items thru your shared bank from good character to good character, etc. You also cannot mail items to opposing alignments thru the Norrathian express mail system.
2. Simple breakdown of classes:
Fighters- tank. taunt. puller.
Priest- heal. buff. rez.
Mage- nuke.
Scout- melee dmg. group utilities.
Each of the 6 subclasses within these 4 general classes will have more specific duties and customized approaches to how they fulfill their basic roles. For example, a Guardian (eq1 warrior) mitigates damage with heavy armor while a Monk uses avoidance to tank. Each subclass has its own "style" of play and it's best to read-up on which one will suit you best before selecting a character.
3. swash/brigand, assassin/ranger- these are very similar classes. the main difference is city alignment. swashs come from qeynos, brigands from freeport - both are rogues. the differences in these examples are subtle, however in some subclasses the difference is more pronounced. Clerics for example, become Templars in Qeynos or Inquistors in Freeport. A Templar is a high-powered healer, while an Inquisitor has an arsenal of debuffs at the cost of less healing power.
Hope that helps a little bit. I reccomend the SOE EQ2 forums for further insight. Feel free to PM for specific info on a subclass.

brigand and assassin also tend to do more damage than their good counterparts. In my opinion the evils also get the better debuffs.
