New to Final Fantasy XI

I am new to Final Fantasy XI and I have some questions for all you people who have been playing this game for some time. My first question would be for how long this game has existed and how many players do you think it has. Where is this game the most popular and what are your experiences with it?

This game has been around for almost five years or so I would think. Because it was created in Japan I think that it is the most popular game over there. Maybe it was not created in Japan, but I know for sure that some Japanese writers are making books that have for the main theme Final Fantasy XI events. I gave been a player of this game for not more then fount months, but I can say that I will continue to play it. A friend of mine gave me a free trial and I liked it, although I was thinking that Final Fantasy XI is not for me at all. How wrong was I? I also met some guys online and now I am really glad I started playing this game.
