I heard about a new proposal that's trying to gather support right now... a Congressmen (I think) from Mass. has put forward a new proposal that basically grants civil unions to all couple, gay and straight, and leaves the marriages to be church-sanctioned only.

I like this guy's idea.. he's definitely looking at it the right way.. thoughts?

Idea has been out for a while..here they wanted to try "Union" for every couple that has been together for X time and marriage for religious one.

Normal to me that since wedding come from religion that they keep it to their rules. But for gay people or straight that want the same consideration the word Union would be ok.

No diff for the gouvernment anaway.

My thought is that's the only logical way to do it.

here anyway after 2 or maybe 3 years of being with someone you are considered as married...so...who care what name definition they give to your couple.

it's all about what would happen is the couple doesn't last and to be known as a religious marriage prevent in no way a couple from divorcing.

Actually it is about more than just what happens when the "union" dissolves. There are signifigant Tax issues, and Health benefits.. and.. other stuff too that i am sure someone that is gay would be able to articulate better than I

I believe this is how it is handled in some places in Europe. It sounds like a good compromise to me, but the impression I get is that it would not be acceptable to at least some of the gay community. I kind of get the feeling that their real goal is total social acceptance of their lifestyle, and not really just health insurance benefits. I could be wrong about this though.

Well what more can they ask then whats offered? if they want to be accepted they need to accept the fact that religion and religous people made up their meaning of a wedding and that it's normal that they want to keep it that way.

IF they in fact only want to have the right to get married in church...that will most likely never happen. And who cares anyway I'm straight and wil lnever get married in a damn church.

There is a God. I'm all for this. I've been for this since day one. Of course, I was called prejudice on this board for suggesting it but whatever, as long as this passes.

There will always be someone who wants more... you can't stop this. Based on what I heard however, it seems most gay groups are going for this as well. I dont speak for the whole community but I know that acceptance within the church was never my goal. I never wanted to be married in the church. It's not a problem to me that the church or other religious institutions will never accept me. All I want is to be able to achieve the same legal status that any straight couple can attain in the eyes of the law.

Yeah, this is where most debates i've heard on this end up. And that's really the way it should be, civil unions are covered by the government, and marriages are covered by the various religions.

I don't really see any downside to it. All couples recieve the same tax-breaks and whathaveyou, and are recognized by the government. Beyond that I believe it's up to the various religions to decide what they want to sanction.

You can't force people to accept you. Give them something that is like marriage, but with a different name. I think they should get the same tax benefits as well.

Heh, that's exactly what I reasoned would be the logical answer to this argument when I first heard of it. We wouldn't even have to ammend the constitution to do it, since the backing for it is already in there, seperation of church and state. State should have zero say in what constitues a marrage, that's whatever church is preforming the ceromony wants it to be. The legal bennifts however should be the same for any 2 people who wish to share responsability for eachother.

I really approve of this, I'm fine with homosexuals getting civil unions, just leave marriage the way it has always been.

there needs to be a stipulation that no church will be forced to marry/perform a civil union for a couple they do not wish to, and will not be legally forced to marry/perform a civil union for a couple.
