New iPod announced! The new iPod, as speculated, features video capabilities and the wider display, but it’s still a music-first device.

The device will feature a 2.5-inch display, QVGA resolution (320 x 240), and will MPEG-4 h.264 (natch), and presumably Quicktime.

The new iPod will be 30% thinner than the current 20GB iPod (making it 0.44-inches thick—say wha?), and will feature a 60GB version (which should be thinner than the current 0.63-inch thick 20GB iPod), and editions of both in black.

The 20GB should go for $299, and the 60GB for $399. They’ll be shipping next week.

iTunes 6.0 will also feature video and the iTunes Music Store will feature video downloads (big surprise, right?)—at launch over 2,000 music videos will be made available at a cost of $1.99 apiece.

I really hope this is useful for more than music videos. While I've gotten hooked on playing some of my music as videos (on a laptop, to enjoy a more full, multi-sensory experience), I'd want a video iPod/iTunes to be capable of ripping/transferring DVDs to later be watched on my pitifully small 2.5 inch screen or sent to TV/audio out for use as a home entertainment system when travelling.

slight tangent, but I need some help here please...

I DON'T UNDERSTAND MUSIC VIDEOS!!

I watched MTV when I was growing up through junior high school (MTV debuted when I was 6) - but not really after that. Why do you need to watch a video with your music? Music is an auditory experience, not visual. Beyond that, most videos are either musicians playing their instruments/dancing around, or soft-core porn videos. Don't even get me started on rap videos (or heavy metal for that matter).

Why do people insist on polluting their music with video, and spend so much time doing so? Would you really pay 2 bucks to watch a music video on your IPod? (beyond that segment of teenage boys and older losers who view it as porn)

Am I that out of touch with pop culture and mainstream American society? I don't read People or watch sit-coms either!!

I heard they've already partnered with ABC TV and you'll be able to download TV episodes for $1.99 as well (e.g. Desperate Housewives).

Music is art, film is art, combining the two is also art. The real problem with music videos is that they give rise to artists who are attractive but have no musical ability. If the music is good then a music video is a nice addition, but most music today completely lacks talent and is propelled by marketing of the artists themselves.

I picked my 4g mini up somewhat recently for $150 and I could care less.

Durable, lasts as long as I need when fully charged, carries more songs than a single charge can play, and contains enough music such that many, many tracks can be skipped and you won't hear anything twice.

Fits my needs perfectly.

Get a Costco membership. They let you take stuff back as long as you have the reciept no matter what condition it's in anytime. Meaning you could take it back in 1 day or 10years.
