I must say, I tried FreeBSD the other day for the first time and it's really nice. Ports > all the rest. That's the first packaging system I didn't think should come with a phallus to suck while you used it.

what I didnt like about BSD was it's really tight security at first, which is a great thing to be, unless yer not used to it like me and cant fekking figure out why you cant log in as root, because you havent added yourself into the group. run-on sentences ftw!

I prefer that.

Every user shouldn't be allowed to SU, it's crazy, especially if you have webservers running.

I am glad that the default in FreeBSD is that you can't SSH as root. These guys at work think SSH as root is great and can't live without it and I had to explain to them how gay it is.

Since I'm rather paranoid on the topic of security, FreeBSD's paranoia is a welcome change. But seriously, ports > up2date * rpm * yum.

as I said before, it's a good thing. just takes getting used to if you've learned on lazy systems

Can you explain the port system a bit?

I'm pretty happy with Debian though it's security was a bit lackluster at install. I do think it's quite silly that a distro would let you SSH in as root by default Sad

On my setup root can't ssh in, and only specified accounts can log in via SSH at all. You also must be a member of wheel to even run SU. Beyond that I've seutp sudo to allow certain users to do certain functions and email me on failed attempts. plus wget and the gcc compilers aren't executable by a default user.

port system in a nutshell

You run a search command in the ports dir to find packages you want, go to the specific ports dir and run "make install" and it downloads any packages needed to support that program, plus the program itself, and either compiles the source and installs the program, or downloads the binaries and installs them...you pick which.

You can customize compiler flags, have it auto update any out of date packages...etc...etc

it's just a great package management system,
