Watched it a couple months ago as a rip from the Chinese DVD with English subs so I don't know what they did to the version in US theaters to cut out 12 minutes but...
The weapon fighting is great. It definetly steps outside of reality (more than CTHD) but still it's fun to watch. I just wish there was more hand to hand, but alot of the story revolves around specific weapons so that's ok.
I personally loved the visual style of the movie. The same scene retold different ways will have a different color scheme which is really interesting.
Jet Li as always is a total badass and the performances are decent enough. It's definetly worth a viewing, in theaters or otherwise.

I've been seeing more and more plugs from Jet and Tarantino on the tube of late.
I must say, the showdown between Jet Li and Donny Yen's characters has to be the most spectacular 1vs1 I've had the pleasure of watching of late. I will go see this movie.

It was decent, but not spetacular. Definately more worthwhile to watch then AvP (the non-director's cut)

I thought this movie sucked ass. THe fighting is h**o. It's all flying and wires, it has no basis in reality, or more importantly no basis in coolness. It's like watching ballet on wires with a dude holding a sword for a prop. There is 1 or 2 decent fights. Seriously the only reasons to see this movie is the cool dialogue between the king and jet li, and if you're into wide angle shots of pretty places on earth. Dunno, movie didnt do it for me.

I just got back from seeing it. I'm sort of disappointed. It's a different movie than what is portrayed in the previews. While it's still good, I was just wanting a kick-everyone's-ass superhero/action flick.
SPOILER:
Also, does anybody else see the Chinese threat against the world in this movie? It's basically about the peaceful virtues of a forcefully unified society. If you extend the concept of this movie to the modern world, I see China as being is akin to Qin, with a desire to basically conquer the world in order to place it under one rule and bring "peace". I wonder if that's a widespread philosophy in Chine.

Wrong. We're not conquering the middle east to rule it as our own. We attempting to rid it of islamic extremism which has poured over into our own land.

Conquering it will cause peace in that region, yes or no? Might not be the main reason but thats an effect it will have.

Peace is the intended result, but our philosophy is very different. We do not want to rule them, as the ruler of Qin intended for all of China in this film. We want them to rule themselves.

When the dude pulled back his sword blade and slapped a chick with it I wanted to turn it off.
Rubber weapons = gay like two men kissing.
The visuals are amazing though.

I really didn't like this movie at all.
The Fights - no continuity - these were more a series of set up stunts. Lots and lots and lots (get it yet?) of flying. Slo-mo flying. And too many weapons fights - not enough hand to hand. The editting was bad here I think - they did too many edits to close up on two feet colliding, rather than the full shot of people actually fighting.... it led to fight without chronology.. I found myself wondering.. ok how the hell did they get to THERE?
The Chars - underdeveloped - period. I didn't give a rats ass about any of them, why?...
The Plot - too disjointed. Broken up into parts where the fundamanetl character development is actually undermined to the point where you do not know who you are dealing with (plot device, but it fails). You end up not giving a shit about any of it.
The Arrows - I used to get a b***r with arrow flights.. think gladiator first scene, LoTR etc.. this movie single handledly ruined this for me FOREVER!!! They went way over the top. So much so that i was like WTF this SUCKS!
anyway - really relly bad movie - two thumbs down from me

It's an art film with fighting, not the other way around. I thought the fight scenes were beautiful, especially Flying Snow vs. Moon. If I want to watch a movie about fighting, I'll watch the Matrix.

I liked them all. If they had spent more time developing their pasts, people would be complaining that the movie was too long. As it was, I had enough people sitting around me, fidgeting during the scenes where there wasn't any fighting because they had to read.

It worked for me. Elaborate on "you do not know who you are dealing with". Do you mean you weren't sure which character was doing what?

Was it the fact that they shot so many arrows, or the fact that Namelss and Flying Snow were fending them off? If it's the first, well, that's how you hurt a city from afar. If it's the second, see "art film". I thought the movie was beautiful. The warriors are legendary, so that's how they fight.

I loved it and agree with silvermouse 100%. It is an art film with fighting. If you liked AVP and hated Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, don't see it.

I just got back from seeing this.
I agree with confused , I was looking for a kick-ass Kill-Bill style thing, which was dipicted in the previews (at kill bill). But I should have known better knowing it was the same director of CTHD
As far as the movie went its self, it was a visually beautiful, and artistic film. I can see how the director interperted his own vision of this age old story into a dream-like film. It is deeply imaginitive, but I found it somewhat cheesey.
One thing I liked:
The colours were amazing , and I loved how each story had a differant colour scheme
One thing I couldn't stand:
No goar (although I see how it makes the movie "classy"), and each sword fight seemed similar, ending with someone diving forward with a sword, and hitting them directly in the chest.

I'm taking a date to see a movie on Friday night and I'm trying to decide which film to see. She wants to see Hero, and so do I, but it's not playing anywhere exciting. Also, Hero will be out in theaters for quite some time so I might get a chance to see it with her next weekend if all goes well.
My other choice is a movie called Ju-on. It's from the producers of Ringu, and it's supposed to be scary as hell. Sam Raimi is directing an American version starring SMG called The Grudge. It's playing at a small independent theater in Hollywood, which means that we'll be able to go visit the town before/after the movie to extend the date. It's a horror movie, though, and she doesn't really like horror films.
Oh, the decisions... pst

i swear after watching hero i thought the laws of physics changed or something.
ok matrix had its "you can't change the spoon, you have to change yourself" bs, but this was plain shit fighting.
i mean watching a guy get a chair broken over his back repeatedly for 2 hours would have been more entertaining.
i'd like to leave you with this picture to represent my feelings towards this movie.
