My office is kept fairly cold on my shift so I have decided to buy a space heater. I have never bought or shopped for one before however and I am looking for some good recommendations. I know nothing about them at all (Never had reason to get one) but I am hoping some of you do.

open a window and let the heat in or tell them quit wasting so much fek power at night when its not needed and shut the air off?
btw black and decker makes a nice little area heater but it will dry things out in the area so ya might wanna get a little kettle too to boil some water for a bit to keep things balanced, dry heat sucks.

No windows to open. The reason they run the AC is because my office is on the same grid or whatever as the computer room right next to me so in order to keep that room cold, they keep this entire area cold. s****y setup, but It cannot be remedied =(

I have same prob with the office being cold, I just started keeping a small blanket under my desk and drape it over my legs when it gets cold.
You can rub one out underneath the blanket and use it for cleanup too, so it's like 3 things in one.

I had the same problem, exacerbated by a major air duct directly above my desk. I tried wearing thermal underwear (in Florida, lol), but my fingers still got numb. In the end, I just wore gloves, the temperature didn't really affect the rest of my body.

where the hell do you guys work? I've worked in data centers most of my life and they are generally cooler than anywhere but a refigerated area. Tell the building/facility manager what the problem is, they should be able to reroute the duct or block it or something.

We were talking about this the other day at work. Thinking that we should get out of software and make vast fortunes by designing a heating/cooling system for office buildings that actually works.
I have a space heater (one of those tiny ceramic ones) and a huge fan in my office and I use them on alternate days. Our current and last buildings are pretty similar: 3 floors, maybe 150 people per floor (not sure how many square feet). Each of those buildings appears to require constant attention by a team of anywhere from two to fifteen HVAC guys, just to keep the system working, and the temperature is always screwed up. It appears to be completely impossible to design a system that will simply keep the air at a constant temperature and roughly constant humidity regardless of outside conditions.
Of course the windows don't help. I was glad that I scored a window office until the HVAC guy pointed his infrared scanner at my window and said part of the problem was the glass was 150 degrees from the sun shining on it, so I effectively have a giant 150 degree convective radiator making up one office wall.

You dont need a heater.
You need cold air to stay awake so you can do your job.

I was quite happy with my office and its two large windows when I first got it and then I also noticed that when the sun is shining on them that place heats up like an oven. I have to keep the shades down all morning or it's too hot. I eventually did get a nice big fan but the drawback is that it blows all my papers around
Heat seems to be fine in the winter.
Why not just take in a sweater for work =p A lot of people there have one. Although it is mostly the admins.

The only heater that I liked is the one that looks like a radiator in shape and has oil flowing through it. They ran about 40. each in WM...nothing to spill, stable as far as standing goes, has wheels to move it, no smell, no open heat source, etc.

For space heaters I'd recommend one that's along the lines of a heat lamp rather than one of those big radiator things. Liquid-filled radiators will take a fair amount of time to heat up and cool down, and you have no control over where the heat goes. I used to have a heat-lamp based space heater and it was great. It looked sort of like a stand-up fan and had high/medium/low settings as well as a timer and an oscillate mode, as well as a remote and an auto-shutoff if someone knocked it over. Down side to it is it has to be aimed at you to warm you, and it can be awkward to do that if you're sitting at a desk. But it provides instant heat when you want it, and stops as soon as you turn it off.

Just get whatever's on sale at Walgreen's, dude. Space heaters aren't really that big of a deal.

Bear in mind that space heaters are prohibited, for obvious reasons, in virtually all offices. So one that's inconspicuous is best.

Haha... of course it can be, BUT what's more interesting? A blog entry about a researched and planned purchase of a space heater? Or a blog entry about all the mishaps and the ensuing hilarity and the trial-by-fire of an impulse-bought space heater?

Very true. We're not allowed to have anything plugged in that's not our workstation at our desks. The security guards inspect our cubes every night and disconnect and usually confiscate things that are plugged in. Desk lamps, fans, etc.

Oh yeah.. just occured to me.. get one that looks like a fan and scrape off the indicator that tells you when it's turned to heat. Don't be lame and get the big parabolic dish ones with wire grates those are a dead giveaway.

The more you describe your workplace the weirder it sounds. Do you have to salute when you walk in?

What if the recommendation from Realpoor is to not take any recommendations? Does that still count?
Hmm... a causality paradox !

Hahaha! People don't believe me, but it's really, really f*****g weird. I don't watch The Office or read Dilbert because frankly it makes me nauseous. We've got people in there who are word for word exactly like the Pointy Haired Boss. I don't read that shit because it's so close to home it's not funny in the least. It's a very bizarre work environment, to be sure.
