Beatles- Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper, Revolver, White Album
Rolling Stones- Personally I like listening to their greatest hits, Hot Rocks
The Who
The Clash
Bowie has some good albums, a little spacey, try Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. If you like that he has a ton more.
Iggy Pop- Raw Power
Probably Led Zepp deserves mention but I'm not a fan, i think Houses of the Holy is supposed to be a good one? Don't know their catalog well.

Any Led Zeppelin really, depends if you like their sappy acoustic stuff or their more classic rock sounds.
II, IV, Houses, and Physical Graffiti are generally considered their best albums.
Also check out Alice in Chains' Dirt and Facelift.
Rush, King Crimson, and Tool are worth a look too depending on your tastes, just "rock" is kinda general for today's music selection.

I'll keep it light.
The Eagles - Anything
Pearl Jam - Ten
The Gathering - Mandylion
Metallica - Puppets, Lightning, Justice
Queensryche - Empire
Opeth - Damnation
Stone Temple Pilots - Their first two main albums. I forget the titles now.
Dave Matthews Band - Busted Stuff, Crash
Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence
I'd recommend Alice and Chains and some GnR, but just select songs.

Pink floyd. The wall, Dark Side of the Moon, Meddle, Animals, Wish you were here are my top 5 favorite albums by them (in no order). Saucerful of Secrets and Piper at the gates of dawn are cool too, but wierd.
Beatles - as mentioned above.. pretty much everything by them rocks
The who - Tommy (the whole cd in order), Quadrophenia (same as tommy), Who's Next, maybe a live album or two if you can find one
Doors - All of their damn albums are good
Yes - Yes, The ladder, some other good ones too
Bob Dylan - You may not like his music much, but listen to some songs from a greatest hits or live album on cdnow or something. If you like him, get highway 61 revisited and blonde on blonde, and work on that from there
Rolling Stones - as mentioned above, get hot rocks or forty licks.. If you like these, go on to Let it Bleed, Beggar's Banquet, Some girls, etc. They have a lot of material.
Led Zeppelin - I don't know most of their albums and what songs are on which, I just borrow my brothers' and listen to them as I get them. The new cd/dvd live collections are good (how the west won) - I think I-IV are good, along with houses of the holy and physical graffiti... I may be messing up/confusing these names though.
Grateful Dead - gotta love them. Get some live stuff (downloadable from nugs.net for free). Dicks picks 1 through 29 are all great. And also any live compilation they have released (one, two from the vault, view from the vault 1 2 3 4, nightfall of diamonds, hundred year hall, live / dead, europe '72, without a net is amazing) if you want to just get songs, PM me and I'll give you a list of some good ones
Phish - phish is influenced by everything from country to bluegrass to funk to jazz to rock to metal to 80s music to etc. etc.... They also have some stuff up for DL on nugs.net.. PM me if you want a list of some of their stuff. There's a reason why the dead and phish could sell out 100,000 + ticket concerts without a problem.
Hendrix, crosby stills nash and young, santana, skynyrd, allman brothers, etc. the list goes on and on. Find some greatest hits for these bands and you'll be set. 60s/70s icons pretty much.
There's so much good music out there. Good luck finding some stuff man.

I forgot... Eric Clapton is pretty ill too. Cream has some good stuff, along with his solo stuff. I'll probably be adding more as I remember.

Beatles - Basically Everything
Rolling Stones- Personal favorite songs: Paint it Black and Sympathy for the Devil.
Cream is good too, but I don't know all their songs. In the White Room is good.
Zeppelin is a must have. The new How the West was Won is awesome. If theres enough demand for it, I can put it up on r00tus's FTP and maybe rip the new concert DVD as well. Zeppelins earlier music is easier to listen to because it's pretty basic, the later stuff people usually don't like as much but it ends up being better once to develop a taste for it.

I'm going to agree with Olto.
Anyone who doesn't like Pink Floyd deserves to be shot. Well, with medical exceptions anyways.
And no matter how much of The Dead you get on cd or mp3 or whatever, there is NOTHING like going to see them live, even the remade band is still damn amazing. I was sad the concert place (tried to) keep the nitrous out this year though.

I'll always think The Beatles were overrated.
Sorry.
Pretty sweet King Crimson was mentioned, and another band that just never got enough attention was/is Uriah Heep. 'Come Away Melinda,' 'Stealin', 'Easy Livin,' 'Time Traveller'... good stuff.
More 70s for ya... Deep Purple is great, and so is Rainbow. I prefer 80s rock, though. Journey, Foreigner, Asia (debut album one of the best ever). Of course Boston ruled... 7 of 8 tracks on their debut album charted, that's a nice accomplishment
I'm on a Jethro Tull kick right now, although I'm a bigger fan of their more recent stuff rather than the older material that made them famous. Did win a Grammy for best heavy metal album in '87 though, which is a bit humorous. I guess flutes have gone heavy lol.
