Some site screwed up my browser. I've been getting a bunch of popup ads, and I noticed my home page is now set to whatever the hell this is:
res://mshp.dll/index.html#37049

I ran spybot, updated it, and deleted everything, did it again, set it so spybot would run on system startup before anything else ran, etc. But I can't fix the home page. It must have changed a registry entry or something that makes it so the "Set Homepage" box under Internet Options is dimmed out so I can't change it.
Any idea how to fix it?

Download CWShredder and run it. It will get rid of your problem. IIRC that hompage is from 'Cool Web Search' spyware.

Yeah, it is Coolwebsearch. It keeps coming back. It's hard to get rid of; spybot keeps saying it can't delete it until I reboot because it's memory resident, then when I reboot it deletes it, but as soon as I get control of the system it's back again. It must be built into something that runs at startup. I'll try CWShredder, thanks.

Yay, that cwshredder did the trick. It pointed out that it was actually Spybot that was preventing me from changing my home page - that's part of it's "immunize" function to set a policy that you can't change it, but there are still back door ways to change it and it ends up just making it so you can't change it back Smile

I deleted the Microsoft java VM since I have the Sun VM anyway.

I don't understand how taking advantage of bugs in stuff like the Java VM to change settings on people's computers and download ads they don't want to see doesn't fall under computer hacking laws btw.

Me either...it's down right scandalous...I don't use any browser plug-ins for that specific reason. No pop-ups or crazy computer manipulating spyware for me thx.
