I have a buncha series I want to burn to dvd, but I dunno if I need to convert them or what. Heres the summary of one of the files.

blah.avi

Image
Width 640
Height 480

Audio
Duration 0:25:00
Bit Rate 128kbps
Audio format Lame MP3

Video
Frame Rate 23 frames/second
Data rate 139kbps
Video sample size 24 bit
Video Compression DivX Codec

Do I need to convert that before I burn it, if so, whats a good tool?

im using tmpgenc right now.

the avi files video rate was at 139kbps, so i told tmpgenc to use that bitrate also for video, will that mess it up, i know dvd should be alot higher.

Khrath, what kind of tv do you have?

If it's just a normal tube tv (no HD) then just encode the episodes at 352x240 as that's all your tv can do anyways. Quality will be suffering overall if you go to full DVD frame size as your original file isn't as good as that.

Here's a template for tmpeg for you that I use and it works well

http://home.comcast.net/~sjd79/khrath.txpe

(right click, save as). This will get you about 7 1/2 hrs of video on a normal DVD. It just creates a mpg file so you will want to use something like DVD Lab Pro to create the actual DVD then burn it.

You need to put that file into your tmpeg template folder in My Docs (that's where it is for me at least). It should then be listed in the list when you choose your details for the encode.

the problem you ran into earlier is that you probably just used the default DVD template which makes the resolution full DVD frame size and if you were using a p**s poor bitrate like that for that size of frame it's going to look like total shit. Even for 352x240 I use at least as CBR of 1300 (this for movies with little action). A VBR between 1500 and 5000 is good for a show with alot of action.

I just used that same template last night to re-encode a copy of The Assassination of Richard Nixon and it looks pretty decent, you might want to up the bit rate about another 800 just to be safe on quality as issues for you might pop up as you have a better setup than I do.
