From: Chad Gifford and Gene McQuade
Date: October 27, 2003
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This morning Fleet and Bank of America announced a definitive agreement to merge. As we hope you heard in Chad’s voicemail, we and our Board of Directors feel strongly that BofA is an ideal partner for Fleet, a company that shares our business approach, values, and commitment to employees and communities. Joining BofA preserves and leverages the strength of Fleet, making us part of the second-largest bank in the country—a bank that can truly be called America’s bank. This company will deliver more financial service capabilities to more Americans than has any bank in our nation’s history.

There is no overlap in our retail franchises, but there are highly complementary business and geographic strengths. This combination is about delivering the combined capabilities of two powerful organizations to our employees, customers, shareholders and communities. Customers will benefit from the broadest retail franchise in the nation, a shared commitment to service excellence, and a full range of traditional and innovative financial products and services. Shareholders will benefit from the best bank franchise in America, unmatched diversity of revenues and resources, and the most talented management team and employee base in the industry. Our communities will benefit from our shared commitment to public-private partnership, community development, and philanthropic investment.
While not headquartered in Boston, Bank of America will be a major presence in the Northeast region. The merger agreement contains commitments to maintain current employment levels and charitable giving. The Wealth and Asset Management, Small Business and Premier businesses will be headquartered here, and the Board of Directors will hold three of its eight meetings annually in Boston.
Fleet executives will play a leadership role within the new company. Chad will be Chairman of the Board, and Gene, Jay Sarles, Brian Moynihan and Brad Warner will serve on the 13-person management committee.
We encourage you to learn more about our new partner from the materials that are being provided to you, and we are committed to keeping you informed as thoroughly as possible in the days and weeks to come.
We believe that this decision is right for our shareholders, our customers, for our communities, our region and, most of all, for you. While we know that there will be some job loss, and that is always painful, we also know that there is more security for more people in this combination than in Fleet continuing to go it alone.
The last couple of years have been very difficult on all of us. It is a source of great pride that, with your help, we turned the corner and have put Fleet back on track. We certainly could have gone on independently and successfully in the near term. But it has always been a hallmark of Fleet to be a winner, not just a survivor, to be at the forefront of our industry and a leader in its consolidation. As we considered our situation, and the landscape around us, we did not believe it was likely that we could maintain that position. Instead, we have chosen to join a partnership that will allow our company to continue to be part of the very vanguard of financial services, a company much like ours, which would take us into being a true national bank of enormous strength and vitality. |
There is no fear of me losing my job =p but you know how much people hate change.
Ugh, stress...

That definitely ranks up there with "It's ok, I'm on the pill" as the most naive things to say.

Actually it isn't.
BoA does not have any presence in the Northeast. Hence the reason they bought this bank. I am one of the top performers for commercial in the district and the region. In commercial banking your customers do not stay with you because of the price or the bank. It is because of the relationship that they have with their commercial banker. So basically I am on the front lines. If I was in a support division like underwriting or some department like that where there would be a duplication with BoA then yeah much f33r for the Job.
I also had a headhunter call me on Friday so at least I have options.

The fact that they bought your bank doesn't mean that they won't lay down the axe. The bank will be made to conform to BA's business practices, meaning some jobs will no longer exist. Also...
Bank of America sucks big fat d**k.

Bank of America Corp. has agreed to buy FleetBoston Financial Corp., in a $47 billion deal that will create the second biggest banking company in the United States.
And yet you will never see any of that money Z.

Actually Paco, I kinda agree with NWS.
Just because Fleet may offer some services that BofA doesn't, means jack shit.
It all boils down to the strategic plan of the corp. executives.
I guarantee they will do a business review of the company, and see whether or not they want to change anything in the new business.
Granted, the real people that are in jeopardy of losing their jobs are the executives and anyone in a management position.
So Zapper, take comfort that any changes that will be made, probably won't happen for a while.
Economy sucks, don't it.

Nah things won't change until next year probably 2nd half. Like I said I'm not really worried, I'm one of the top producers so I could always find a job with a competing bank easy, I have a large client portfolio that I could tap. Besides I have already had a headhunter call me at work too lol.
The great thing about this merger is that fleet stocu is up like $8 last i checked and 20% of my 401k is in Fleet stock.
It won't be in the papers until tomorrow but it was on the news at noon. Now everyone is friggin calling me asking wtf is happening.

lol, i don't hate you..hell i don't even hate paden(i hate his ignorance and stupidity but time will help him there)
I hate how scary you are, and that one of these days, you'd like flip out and kill people the way you talk about things. Just an observation.
And talking politics or relgion is always a bad thing to do, no matter who it is, friend or foe. I get p****d at my sister when she decides to lay into me about who I voted for, but I don't hate her.
One thing you should do NWS, is act. Don't just b***h. Do something about it if you feel so strongly. Quite frankly, nobody gives a shit how you feel about abortion, or if you think I, or the others here, are bad because we disagree with you.
You just don't like the fact that I called you out on your Hell thread.

I won't flip out and kill anybody (about 20 babies were killed between your post and mine, though). I don't care if you disagree with me. I do find it surprising that nobody who's "pro-choice" will take into consideration the nature of the act of abortion. It's a case of mass-denial.
