I got a '00 Shadow ACE 750
It's my 5th bike, my 2nd I bought new. I have to admit it is an awesome bike. My dad owned an 1100 Shadow that they turned into the Spirit.. was before the ACE came out in early 90s. He put around 75k miles on it with only one problem. Think the bearing blew in his front tire.
I love em, they really are great bikes and hold up well. I've never had a problem with mine. Rides like a dream, extremely easy mantience and well built.
I'm not sure what size you looking to get but i've riden the new 1100s and didn't like the feel at all. Why I opted for 750 since it felt like a glove and i'm about 6'1. It lacks the extra passing power at high speeds for the neccassary oomph to pass that semi. But it cruises great around 85mph. Either way if you like the 1100s feel, either would be a good choice.

Be a man, theres no substitute, sportsters are pretty cheap and will at least get the respect of having a harley.
I see nice ones often go for $2500-5000 localy.
and the price never goes down the more you do to them the more there worth.

A real Harley is definitely cooler to be seen riding around on, but something like a honda shadow or a kawasaki vulcan will be cheaper, quieter, more reliable, and not shake the hell out of you. From what I hear you can't really even use the rearview mirrors on a sportster because they're vibrating so much.
