11K will pretty much get you any dirt bike, and most street bikes. however, if you went street bike, and don't know anything about bikes, I'd get a used 600 a year or 2 old. more power than most people can handle, cheaper insurance, and less of a bite to buy. that'll leave you more money for the insane insurance tag, and the unforgetable bling bling of adding chrome/fur/etc.
however, assuming you were a pro, and need more CCs cuz 160MPH+ isnt enough for you from a 600, you can get a GSXR750, or honda 929(or whatever the 9 series is this year). All sport bikes, no matter what CC they are, have approx the same 0-60 and quarter mile time. The added CCs come in in the top end, slightly different power band feel, and more torque for wheelies, etc.
Good 600's would be
Suzuiki GSX-R 600
Kawasaki ZX-6R
Honda F4
Yamaha R6
All pretty much the same bike. pick yer color/style is more what ya do.
edit: my old gsxr 750

For a new bike owner a Hyabusa is a NO NO. It can't corner for shit. it's WAY too powerful and they have a recall for the linkage. Apparently some of them lock up at high speeds causing the motorcycle to flip end over end. It's death on wheels.
My opinion, a Suzuki GSXR 750. It's not a dirt bike, but it's a well rounded street motorcycle. You can usually get a decent one for about $6,000. Good Quality, nice track record.

1998 Harley-Davidson 1200 Sporster Sport. That should run you about $10k. You won't be going 150+ mph on it, but it's fairly quick and one of the coolest bikes you can own. It'll flat out toast any other HD on the road. Granted , Harley's aren't exactly speedsters, but, then again, rice burners aren't exactly cool either.

I LOVE HARLEY DAVIDSON
However, if you want speed ... don't bother.
I agree the sportster is one of the best entry level bikes Harley makes.
I saw one the other day for $9,500.00

Any of the big CC bikes like the Honda XX, Hyabusa are just big fat pigs. Over weight and disgusting.
GSX-R's are fun but the powerband can be a little narrow for new riders, I've seen them get away from n00bs because the power has a tendency to turn on like a light switch. Of course, this was a few years ago so I've no idea how the newer ones are.
For beginning sportbike riders I'd recommend the CBR 600 series, as others have said, buy used first. If after a year it's not that big of a deal to sell it and upgrade to whatever you want by then. Like the latest Yama R1 or whatever floats your goat.
I wouldn't recommend a Ducati (even though it's well out of your price range) unless you've got enough cash to ride it like it's a typical priced bike. I knew guys who would save up for years at their shit jobs just to buy one and then be paranoid as f**k to ever ride the thing since they couldn't afford it if anything went wrong. They are high maintenance trophies unless you've got the cash and the balls to push em around a bit.
And remember. It takes 2-4 guys to jack your bike, and takes seconds to do it. Treat that shit like it's your first born. And no, I do not mean, stick it in a cage and poke it with sticks you sick (yet, comical) f***s.

I saw a pretty bike outside of houston this weekend. It looked like a stretched crotch rocket, yellow with all chrome. It comfortably sat The driver and his woman (unlike most sport bikes).

I buy my bikes from Canada, you can save a ton. I just payed $8,000 for my 2003 GSX-R 750 delivered to my house. They deliver anywhere in the US i think also, i am close to the border though. I saved about $1500 over the cheapest price i could find.
I would suggest a 600 also, most 600's are faster then the 900's of a few years ago, and insurnace will be cheaper for you also.

If you are into a "dirtbike" as well like I believe I read it really doesn't matter what you get. CR,KX,RM,YZ and the KTM are all damn fast and up to par.
Usually CR's have an ungodly top end and a powerband that is just so ruthless you really have to be on your toes or it will toss you for a loop. If you are not an experienced rider you don't want a CR. Get a RM or YZ. Usually they hit a little softer than a Honda.
I believe about 6 k will get you any new 250. And then you can get a pipe, graphics, Pro Taper bars, suspension work and some nice riding gear for another 2 k or so. Looking sharp for 8 k. Then buy a 3 k used streetbike that you can get killed on with crazy automobile drivers who don't look or care about things smaller or larger than them (bikes or 18 wheelers)
I don't know much about streetbikes. I know the old CBR 900 RR was insanely fast. A friend had two. One he wiped, one insurance paid for and he did some performance work. (boggles)
