Quote:

The Huygens spacecraft is ready to make history as it heads for its rendezvous with Saturn's smog-shrouded moon Titan.

On 14 January, Huygens will dive through Titan's atmosphere taking images and readings on the way.

Its scientific investigation of this mysterious world could yield clues to how life first arose on Earth.

The robotic lab will hit Titan's atmosphere at 0907 GMT. If all goes well, it will be the furthest from Earth a spacecraft has been landed

pretty awesome, titan is the closest planet to earth that we've found, can't wait to see if there's life on it.

A big dinosaur type thing is going to eat it!

Really though this kicks alot of ass. Seeing Mars was cool but I really think this is going to take the cake.

If he does, he does. My bet is that he either responds and says something that basically means he didn't know or he'll just flat out ignore it. We'll see.

When I said what I did up there it was in reference to the entire mission, Cassini-Hyugens, not just the probe.

yes I know I said that. The purpose was to say that I think Khrath meant that it was the closest thing to a planet like ours that we've found, I understood that to mean that nothing else has resembled earth like this has.

Quote:
Cassini-Huygens is an international collaboration between three space agencies: NASA, ESA and the Italian space agency, Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI). Seventeen nations contributed to building the spacecraft.

The Cassini orbiter was built and managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The Huygens probe was built by ESA. ASI provided Cassini's high-gain communication antenna. More than 250 scientists worldwide will study the data collected.
The development of the Cassini-Huygens mission, a complex and ambitious venture originally between NASA and ESA, required substantial scientific, technical and programme planning effort over several years.

In the late 1970s, NASA studied several scenarios for a mission to Saturn as the next step after the Galileo orbiter and probe mission to Jupiter in the detailed exploration of the giant planets.

The Cassini mission was originally proposed in November 1982 by a team of European and American scientists as a collaborative initiative with NASA in response to a regular call for mission ideas by ESA.

Very early in the study phase, the Titan probe was identified as ESA’s potential contribution to the international Cassini mission. It was within the technical capabilities of the European space industry, which had some experience in planetary missions, mainly acquired with the Giotto mission of 1985. The Titan probe was named Huygens in honour of the Dutch scientist who discovered Titan in 1655.

On the Huygens probe itself there are six instruments, each developed by different international teams. The organisations involved include the Université de Paris VII, Observatoire de Paris-Meudon, and the CNRS Service d'Aéronomie, both of France, University of Arizona, USA, Universität Bonn, Germany, and the Open University, UK.

These are supported by contributions from ESA, NASA and other organisations in Italy, Austria, Germany, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Norway, Finland and the United States.

I had no idea the ESA had anything to do with it. Congrats to them, glad they had a hand in it.

That being said....

The ESA is a joke. Shit, we have private companys that will be in space before europe. I'm happy they are keeping their gadget skills up, thats great. But comparing cargo to the actual space ship said cargo resides in, is wrong.

I repeat, its great they made the probe, glad they could lend a hand.

But, by no means did we need them, we let them come along. Me posting the American flag was more about the fact that we can even GO there. Who made the cargo is not as interesting.

US Titans taking off with european cargo!

Now that the Cold War is over and the relevant funding is lessened, a lot of scientific stuff in space is done via collaboration of many nations and agencies simply because there is not enough money for one space agency to make things happen. USA, Russia, Europe, Japan and every other interested country cooperate and they split expenses and resources, it works nicely that way.

No no no...

I'm not doing the work for you. You have to figure out why you are wrong on your own. Otherwise you learn nothing.

Then might I suggest you never criticize again?

I fail to see somebody can be wrong about something subjective if responses are limited to vague criticisms.
