And this surprises people?

Microsoft has been a thieving, lying, bullying company since day one. There is so much evidence showing how the company has stolen, bribed, threatened and cheated nearly everyone they've come in contact with... honestly it just reinforces the truth that people believe what is marketed to them and what they want to believe. Whatever makes them the most comfortable is what they will believe.

MS has enough money to make people disappear off the face of the earth. I'd rather join em than fight em
I could care less about the politics of MS - 99.9% of all of it is blown wayyy out due to media but *shrug*
Oh and the video.... Steave Balmer does get a bit excited haha

Any company, government, religion, organization or individual with any amount of power is corrupt, and will abuse whatever power they have. Period. It's a law of nature.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion but there are hundreds of companies and decades of evidence (books, lawsuits, etc) which say otherwise.

It is blown out of proportion from the media, but then again what isn't nowadays? It's still really bad, but the media just makes it worse than it is.

All of it? Most of it? 2 stories? 10 stories? Read some history of the company before saying things like that.

Yes, but say you were a small business owner - lets say a Coffee shop. You have been in business for years, suddenly you have the majority of all coffee sales in your town.. Other coffee shops are going to b***h/whine/sue/etc. stating that they have no way to make money because you are a monopoly.
See lawsuits against starbucks lately? No.
In the software/hardware industry it is different because if you are the 'monopoly' for a technology driven company then said company sets the standards of how the majority of the world works (Look at how many computers use windows or windows-based products).
But like I said before - I don't give two s***s about any of the higher-end microsoft politics. I am not a VP/CEO and I don't own enough stock to care if it goes up or down (to an extent... don't go down too far please!).
I just do my job, get my paycheck and buy my toys ^_^

I'm not saying that MS isn't one the sleaziest, dirtiest companies around, but if you think that all of the media portrays everything in a completely accurate and unbiased view then you really need a smackin', sir Dunn

I know lots of people who've been in companies that talked to Microsoft. Invariably they got burned.
The typical scenario is Microsoft would approach them and say "we want to do a deal to use your technology". If they said no thanks, Microsoft would say "you have to deal with us; if you don't, we'll just do the deal with one of your competitors and with us behind them you'll be driven out of business".
If they said OK, they'd have lots of detailed technical discussions with Microsoft, get no money, nothing would come of it, and ultimately a year or two later Microsoft would come out with their own product based on what they learned while suposedly negotiating a deal. And they're basically too big for a small company to have a realistic chance of suing and winning.
I wouldn't have anything to do with Microsoft if I could help it, but you don't always have a choice. They're as corrupt as you get.

I'm not sure where you pulled that one, but it is not only irrelevant but it's off topic.
If you want to acknowledge that yes "the media" distorts news against Microsoft sometimes, then you must also acknowledge it distorts news in favor of Microsoft also.
But I'm not talking about "the media." I'm talking about court cases, judicial evidence and leaked memos. I'm talking about people who have met microsoft corporate officers for brainstorming sessions and walked away getting sued. I'm talking about a company contracting Microsoft (in its early days) to fix some source code - and MS turning around and reselling that product as their own.
MS has contributed a lot to the development of user interfaces. Does that excuse theft and extortion?

No sir, it's not. And yes the media does invariable distory media both in favor and against on almost any topic, but us Americans love to listen to the negative things much more than the positives, because we don't find them as interesting.

Okay so far you have contributed:
* The media blows things out of proportion
* "Us americans" love to listen to negative things
Are you supposed to be making a point? What are you trying to say? MS is _not_ a thieving, backstabbing corporate structure which ruins any business in their way? I don't think that's what you're trying to say.
Ikkan I think maybe you are pointing your argument at the wrong thread. You are saying people+news sources = raises the noise:signal ratio. That's true, but that's not the topic. The topic is whether or not MS is an unethical company.

My question is, why does anyone REALLY care?
I mean... Did MS do anything personally against any of you? I highly doubt it.

Not exactly a good analogy. Coffee has been around since the time of the Aztecs, tea since the ancient eastern civilizations.Maybe not in its current form but coffee and tea are as old as mankind.
This is more akin to being a small coffee shop, discovering that squashed up slugs make a better drink than coffee, hording all the slugs in your town in a secret location, threatening and beating up old ladies who have slugs in their garden or are suspected of having slugs in their garden and are not selling then to you, salting everyone else's yards so that they can't have slugs, then marking up the price of your slugjuice 2000% just because their isn't an alternative.
That's more of what this is like.

Microsoft sucks, they DO rape companies for technology and do all the nasty stuff you hear about on TV.
I have 2 uncles in the bay area, one is an inventor, the other is an engineer for Sun Microsystems.
The inventor had a group of people that worked for him on a project, a bunch of software engineers in fact. while I was up there they ranted and raved about how MS would absorb the ideas that they worked hard to develop and sell on their own.
The other uncle at Sun once told me that the attitude about MS up in Silicon Valley is "Develop a great idea or whatever, but be wary and ready because MS WILL steal it, guaranteed".
They basically stifled creativity by stealing ideas, gutting the idea, and tossing a crap version of it in whatever version of Windows was the primary at the time.
On the flip side, I actually think that having Windows be the prevalent OS in the world is a good thing. I mean, it sucks so bad that it needs hundreds of people to support in the large enterprise environment.
Microsoft does, in fact, do the crap you hear about on TV Uglar, you just don't hear it because you work for them, the other side of that battle used to be a damn ugly thing.
The first anti-trust suit calmed them down a bit, hopefully this fine will put them in line more.

Non-thinking peon? I develop new tools and procedures on a daily basis, these tools get released on a world-wide scale to build developers in both the UK and Japan. I work on average about 65 hours a week and when I'm not @ work I'm answering emails and solving problems from home.
But ya, I like shiny things...

Oh I know
At this stage in my life I am very materialistic - I'm a single white guy that likes to ski, sky dive, motorcycle, etc. etc etc.
If and when I ever get married my outlook on money will change, but for now I'm going to live life to the fullest and have a blast doing it.
Ilene - I know microsoft does a lot of what is said. I freely admit to that and I do hear about it. I'm not fighting for MS stating that they are not an evil empire - hell I even call them "M$" most of the time. I'm just saying me as a "lowly peon to the man", I dont really care about big-corporate crap that you see in the news. I'm just glad I have a job that I enjoy going to - and one that allows me to surf porn and post on realpoor on a daily basis ^_^
