|

Haha, I just got an email from IT at work, with instructions on how to install the Microsoft tool which blocks Windows Update from installing SP2. There wasn't even a smiley, or haha, or anything, just perfectly serious routine instructions. People's expectations have been lowered to the point that nobody else even found it ironic.
Well, afterwards they said they did, but I was the only one who actually screamed

Huh? Microsoft made a tool to stop another Microsoft product? I don't understand.

I guess SP2 has been fux0ring peoples computers, especially laptops. So they released a tool to prevent it from being automatically installed by windows update. Microsoft = head up ass.

Subject: please install immediately to block the download of XPSP2
Attachments: xpblock.ZIP (10 kb)
Microsoft has released tools to block the automatic installation if XP SP2. The following instructions assume you have winzip installed and are logged into your computer using your work account which is part of the local administrators group.
1) Create a directory on your C drive called xpsp2
2) Copy the zip attachment to c:\xpsp2
3) Double click on c:\xpsp2\xpblock.zip and extract both files to c:\xpsp2
4) Close winzip and then double click on c:\xpsp2\block.bat
5) You should see a popup window with “Action completed successfully”. The popup will close automatically.
6) DONE
If you do not see the popup window with “Action completed successfully” then please let Ed, Jeremy, or Steve know
Thanks,
IT

We got the following email forwarded to us from Juniper networks since we sell Juniper gear to our customers.
Synopsis/Title:
Windows XP SP2 incompatibility with Juniper Networks NetScreen SSL-VPN products
Issue:
The Juniper Networks engineering team has been regularly monitoring the Release Candidates of Microsoft's Windows XP SP2 to ensure compatibility with the SSL-VPN product. However, changes in the latest version of SP2 released on August 6, 2004 resulted in a compatibility issue that our engineering team reported to Microsoft. Microsoft confirmed the reported issue and is actively working fixing Windows XP to address this issue.
Solution:
Customers using Juniper Networks NetScreen SSL-VPN products should NOT upgrade to Windows XP SP2 until further notice. The latest version of Windows XP SP2, released on August 6, 2004 is not supported by Juniper Networks SSL-VPN products.
We are working closely with Microsoft to resolve this issue and anticipate that there will be a fix in Windows XP in the near future.
This bulletin will be updated as additional information becomes available.
Implementation:
If you have not already upgraded Windows XP SP2, we recommend that you do not install SP2 at this time. If you have already upgraded to Windows XP SP2, we recommend that you uninstall the SP2 update until further notice.
There is no known workaround on the SSL-VPN product at this time.
For future release information on Windows XP, please refer to the Microsoft website.

Wouldn't you think that if it didn't work, they'd stop automatically downloading it? Rather than requiring you to download yet another tool?

Ok, in what time frame has Microsoft ever made stuff... 'easy'?

I'm glad I'm still using NT at work and Linux at home, I don't have to deal with this shit. The fact that peopel say Microsoft is "not easy" is sad. The fact that Microsoft released a service pack that's supposed to "harden" their OS which should have been that way in the first place is f*****g lame, and now its breaking other vendors products is even worse. The more these lapses in software engineering continue to happen the more people will look at MacOS and Linux ... or even Amiga!
