Imax Rallies on Plans to Release 'Matrix' Films

2003-04-23 20:24:53 GMT (Reuters)
By Jeffrey Hodgson

TORONTO (Reuters) - Shares of big-screen movie systems maker Imax Corp. jumped more than 10 percent on Wednesday after it said the two sequels to the hit film "The Matrix" would be released in Imax theaters this spring and fall.

The Toronto-based firm said "The Matrix: Reloaded" and "The Matrix: Revolutions" would be reformatted using Imax technology for release on its screens, which soar up to eight stories high. The same process brought "Apollo 13" and "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones" to Imax theaters last year.

The first "Matrix" sequel will hit Imax screens shortly after the film's general release on May 15. The second sequel will have a simultaneous release in Imax and regular theaters on Nov. 5, the first time this has happened with a major live-action film.

Analysts said the news showed Imax was having success with its attempts to persuade Hollywood studios to convert standard film prints to Imax format in tandem with a push to expand its theater network.

The move prompted investment bank Jefferies & Co., a market maker in the stock, to reiterate its "buy" rating and raise its 2003 year-end price target to $9 from $7.50.

"We believe the release of an event picture with the stature of "The Matrix" makes leasing of an Imax projection system more compelling to theater owners," analyst Kavir Dhar said in a note to clients.

Imax stock closed up 64 cents, or almost 11 percent, at $6.70 on Nasdaq with more than 1.1 million shares changing hands. In Toronto, Imax rose 98 Canadian cents to C$9.73 with more than 250,000 shares traded.

Since the start of the year, the stock has risen about 54 percent in Toronto, handily outperforming the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index, which is little changed on the year.

Imax co-chief executive Bradley Wechsler told Reuters that the company's introduction of a smaller, lower-cost theater system, combined with the release of big Hollywood films in the Imax format, should spur theater owners to lease more of the company's theater systems.

Theater system leases make up the majority of the company's revenues.

"Imax makes its money in the systems leasing business, not in the film business and our view of getting a film like 'Matrix' into Imax is that it will make the Imax theaters much more successful," he said.

Wechsler declined to discuss the financial details of its agreement with Warner Brothers, which made the "Matrix" films, but noted the company normally gets royalties of around 5 percent to 7 percent of the box office gross of films shown in Imax theaters.

The chief executive said Imax is in talks with other major studios about releasing major Hollywood movies simultaneously in Imax theaters. He said an incentive for the studios to do this is that moviegoers are willing to pay a higher ticket price to see films on Imax.

Wow, I always thought that if they released actual movies that people wanted to see for Imax that it would be incredible. Not that I dont' like "Journey to the Great Barrier Reef" or whatever, but the nature stuff got a little boring after awhile.

Although I'm not sure what Imax is exactly anymore. The ones I used to go to were just a huge screen that wrapped around you. Now they have these ones that you wear some kind of 3D glasses for, but they're not actually as big of a screen, and they still call it Imax.

I'm pretty sure Imax is just the film format...it's a larger film and it's shot at a higher FPS I'm pretty sure is all.

Then again, I'm usually wrong.

Imax is 70mm, compared to 35mm for a normal theater. Matrix was probably originally shot in 35mm, though, so I don't think the transfer will even be worth it. Some friends of mine saw Spiderman in the local imax theater, and they said it was just like the regular theater, only on a bigger screen. Who knows, though. Maybe they can make of 35-70 transfer look good.

Unless it was shot completly digitally like the last Star Wars movie. Then any transfer would be a piece of cake.

That rocks! Howdy, Bat! PL me plz.

In addition to the larger screen and higher quality film, IMAX theaters also have 10x more speakers for better audio.
