Ok, original post was something like this... this one is correct though.

Opening weekend gross

8517 screens, 7 dollars a ticket, let's say 150 people per show (most theaters around here showing it hold approx 200+ people, but we'll go low on this) 4 shows per screen per day, 4 days worth of shows, plus the 9 mil they say they made Weds night for early showings.

Number of total showings between all theaters: 136,272
Number of people viewing the showing: 20,440,800 (this is including anyone who sees it twice, etc)
Amount of money at $7 per ticket: $152,085,600

Now we know this won't happen, but it's the potential for the movie in a single weekend... insane. True prediction for the movie... $67 mil.

I think it will top 67 million pretty easily, but I haven't been reading Variety in a long time.

It's tricky because they went with a 4-day weekend, so It'll probably clear $100 million.

I mean... nothing else came out this weekend.

It's already grabbing records for first day revenues.

Kala, that was the single showing Weds early show that alot of theaters did. That was Weds alone...

They said it got 40 something mil. on Thurs too.

Will it beat 114 mil Spidey opening?

None of this means much, btw, as the record gets broken every year now.

Problem is the dollar amount brought in isnt what should be used. How many people payed to see it would be more realistic, since every year it costs more and more to go see movies. So of course the records will keep going up.

By the way, I saw figure that puts Matrix's take at $93 million for its opening weekend, which falls a bit short of Spiderman's $115.

I guess it was one of those movies that everybody tries to see as quickly as possible, and it probably won't linger around the top too long with all the summer blockbusters following right behind it. However, the next couple of weeks look awfully weak.
