Man sues Atkins over heart problems he blames on diet
By JILL BARTON
Associated Press
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A businessman has sued the promoters of the Atkins Diet, saying the low-carb, high-fat meal plan clogged his arteries and nearly killed him.
Jody Gorran, 53, said today that he was seduced ``with a bacon-wrapped cheeseburger'' to blindly follow the Atkins Diet, which also made his cholesterol soar to a risky level.
The lawsuit, filed with the aid of the Washington-based advocacy group Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, seeks less than $15,000. The suit also names the estate of the diet's late creator, Dr. Robert Atkins.
Atkins Nutritionals said it stands by the science that has ``repeatedly reaffirmed the safety and health benefits of the Atkins Nutritional Approach.'' The company also questioned the motivation of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which promotes a vegan diet banning meat, fish, dairy and egg products.
The Atkins Diet advocates meat, eggs and cheese, frowns on bread, rice and fruit, and allows up to two-thirds of calories from fat, more than double the usual recommendation.
Gorran said he started the diet in 2001 because his weight had risen from 140 to 148 pounds. In two months, he said, his cholesterol rose from a normal 146 to an unhealthy 230, and by October 2003, he needed angioplasty to clear his arteries.
``I came very close to dying, and this is from a diet I thought was marvelous,'' said Gorran.
Atkins medical director, Dr. Stuart Trager, said the cholesterol increase claimed by Gorran is ``dramatically greater than what we have seen'' in scientific studies. He said a recent Duke University study showed only minor cholesterol increases, in some cases up to 10 percent.
Robert Atkins argued that carbohydrates generate too much insulin, which makes people hungrier and encourages them to put on fat. His books, including the best-selling ``Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution,'' have sold 15 million copies and attracted millions of followers.
The same advocacy group involved in the suit filed Wednesday released details of Atkins' autopsy report in February, 10 months after he died after slipping on an icy sidewalk. The report showed Atkins, 72, had a history of heart trouble, including congestive heart failure and high blood pressure -- details that stoked debate over the diet.

Yep, shame it wasn't a fatal heartattack. You go on a diet and it's your fault if something goes wrong. Only person to blame is yourself.

... although it should be noted that the Atkins diet is not healthy, even though it's reported to be.

Yeah, most of the reports I've seen say it appears that the Atkins diet "works", in the sense that you lose weight. But that's not exactly the same thing as being "healthy". You might just end up weighing less when you die

I really haven't ever seen any diets that facilitated permanent change except for a conscious change in diet and exercise. All the other fads come and go but the only proven way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat healthy and exercise regularly.
Just as get rich schemes do not work neither do get slim diets. Things like this never pass the test of time.
Atkins has been proven to be TERRIBLE for your body. People on this are asking for trouble down the road. Your kidneys cannot handle the additional stress over the long run that Atkins places on them.

That's a good point. One of my cats was diagnosed recently with 75% kidney failure. The vet said it wasn't anything specific, just from a lifetime of handling too much protein; it just wears them out. He's on a low protein diet now, and I have to inject water under his skin once a week to help hydrate him.
Every time I have a steak now I wonder if that's doing the same thing to me.

While I think the Atkins diet is as bad as you. The Kidney statement is simply not true. There has never been a single study (that I have seen) (and there has been many done) proving any correlation between protein intake or fat intake and kidney damage. There isn't even any compelling evidence of a causul link.
The Atkins diet, as bad as it may be, is a good thing for America. For people who are unwilling or unable to excercise, there is no better solution than the Atkins diet. However, if you are healthy enough to engage in exercise the Atkin's diet is nothing more than a crutch for the weak. Those with physical ailments or severe obesity however are great examples of the power of the Atkin's diet, at least until they become healthy enough to exercise.

I have no knowledge of cat physiology, and protein intake may very well cause that for them. But in human's it does not. If you aren't staying sufficiently hydrated and eat excess protein, then sure it may aggravate it. But that is akin to Saying a car is broken becuase you forgot to fill it with gas.

Your health advice is as bad as your movie advice. Completely wrong in both cases.
If you are unwilling to exercise then you deserve to be a f****s.

Do I have to quote studies or not? As for your second comment, I mostly agree. But some people who do try to change are in position where even walking would be huge. These are the type of people that can benefit the most.
A healthy individual needs a certain amount of carbs in order to be able to work out hard either through some type of cardio or weight lifting. But if all a person is physically capable of is walking then that is the bottle-neck of their weight loss program. Expecting Joe Blow 400lb America to be in the gym doing Bench Presses and weights for an hour, then 30 mins of cardio everyday 6 days a week is not only unrealistic, it's almost impossible.
The cornerstone of all fitness is making it a lifestyle, to do that it needs to be something that the body can accept and make into a habit. Not many people that are weak-willed enough to become seriously overweight are strong-willed enough to follow the exercise regimes of competitive bodybuilders overnight. The Atkins diet provides those people with a pathway to take their obesity to a lever where it becomes manageable in a much more healthy way - through exercise and a *REAL* healthy diet.
You can post as many stupid 1 liner replys as you want. But show me more than 1 bodybuilder who has died from kidney failure? There hasn't been any prominent ones that I can think of. And they have been doing the Atkins diet since Atkins applied to Med-School.
