I keep hearing about this actually happening, and I still don't get it. It was even in the news the other day (again!), they were talking about people making huge amounts of real, actual money, by doing nothing except of trading fictional SL real estate. HTH does this work, and why do people pay for it?

The overarching economy of SL can sometimes be hard to grasp at first, especially when it comes down to land ownership (where the big bucks are). Yes, people do effectively pay for real money virtual property, but usually because they expect to sell that property and make a profit. Compare it to the stock market, where "virtual" property is bought and sold constantly without anyone having any real intention of possessing it.
