I have an old G4 400 MHz here that was running OS 9.1. I downloaded Tiger (10.4) from bt but the stupid thing has the disk images as .dmg. I couldn't find anything to open .dmg files under OS 9.x, but I did remember that I had the OS X Public Beta disc from like 2000 so I installed that. After a lot of futzing around I got the images onto the Mac, but the Tiger installer just starts and quits. So my question is, can I just manually copy all the files from the disk image to the respective location on the drive? There's supposedly some utility called hdiutil that will let you convert from .dmg to .iso, but it doesn't work with Public Beta, it complains about some libraries. Alternatively does anyone know of a way to burn a .dmg's filesystem to CD using Nero on Win2k? I have a feeling it's not possible, but if it's not then this whole computer is just a big paperweight at this point, which would suck, even though it's slow.

.dmg to .iso doesn't work
there is some extra info that gets f****d with upon conversion that you need in order for osx to recognize the disc upon restart
also, you must put them on CDs to install, there is a point where it is like "restart now" and you need to have real CDs to finish setup

If you are using Mac OS X check under the utilities folder for Disk Utility. Try mounting them using Disk Utility instead of just double-clicking. You might also try downloading Toast from bittorrent and using that to mount them. Really though, I would just NOT use Tiger. Apple has been sending out CnDs like crazy to keep bittorrent sites from hosting working versions; try finding Jaguar instead.
