Looking to get one. I'm looking for something that is small enough that I can put into my jacket pocket and run an ear piece up into my helmet while I ride my bike. Also, I'd like to get one that I can hook into my home theatre system via S-video or something like that(if they even have that capability available?). Not wanting to pay tons of money and I don't need shitloads of storage space. Any suggestions?

DO NOT get an iPod mini, it's a waste of money. 4G mini is 200, 6G mini is 250. For 300 you could get a 20G. I have a 15 and mine is almost full. You can use your remaining space as a portable hard drive also, that is what I do.

Ya, but its bulky as hell and it's 600 bucks (256mb wtf LOL). With 600 bucks you could get a 60G iPod photo and a pair of Oakleys..

ok...so you'd have glasses + an ipod. and that's bulkier then JUST the glasses?
wtf are you smoking
I have a 60 gig creative zen which is great for long drives. but if you want something that's easy to carry, which requires no pockets and is easy to use..
thump pwns.

I never said it wasn't bulkier. But glasses + iPod or another HD mp3 device is more logical and thumps, and less expensive.

I got a 40 gig ipod photo. 7k songs and 1k high-res pictures and I still have as much space as I'll ever need for a portable hardrive.
Get the BELKIN FM-Transmitter and a Belkin FM-Transmitter cigarette lighter charger and you're so set for music wherever you go.

Not if the question asked was the following: | Quote: | | I'm looking for something that is small enough that I can put into my jacket pocket and run an ear piece up into my helmet while I ride my bike. |
Then a HARD DRIVE mp3 device is to bulky.
For his question, the thump is the best choice. the 256 megs allow me to carry around 4-5 hours of music depending on compressions.
And if your riding a bike, i doubt you normally ride it more then that in a row..
hence, more logical for his situation

an svidio connector on an mp3 player?
i use an ipod shuffle .. i like it a lot .. 1 gig storage, 12 hours battery life .. really great sound output even if you plug mini speakers into it .. and its absolutely tiny .. fits in the mini jean pocket inside your pocket nicely .. also has no moving parts (its just flash memory) so it is very portable .. can use it while doing just about anything
as for the whole outputting it to a theatre system .. that i guess isn't so good since in order to charge it needs to be plugged in to USB power ..
.. but any mp3 player will plug into a home theatre .. just get a male to male headphone cord .. and if anything you might need one of those jacks that makes one of the ends bigger (f**k me for not remembering the specific names for all this shit) .. and if you dont have that then just get a cord that turns a headphone cord to RCA outputs .. all cheap, good stuff
if it's digital output you are looking for (i dont know why you'd want that, i would imagine the difference isn't that much coming out of an mp3 player) then I am not sure what to tell you .. i cant think of any mp3 players with the portability you are looking for that also have digital output

I'd highly recommend the iPod Shuffle 1GB for low-cost portable music. You can probably score one for $125 now. The two selling-points on it (for me) are: playing AAC formats and it is crazy small.

I've got the 30gb Zen Xtra (cheaper than 20gb iPods by almost $100, 40gb model is $60 cheaper) and I love it. Hasn't skipped once on me jogging or anything. My friend complains about his iPod skipping while he jogs, not sure if it's an overall problem tho.
iPods are nice, but you're really paying more for the trendiness of it. They all work the same, so why spend so much more money?
edit: forgot to say that it's REALLY easy to put songs on and pull em off. a lot better than s****y itunes.
it's basically a hook-in for windows explorer, you might not even need to download the software to use it, I know it'll recognize it as a HDD without the software. whereas with iPods they won't let you pull stuff off without software, and it's been a real pain getting an iPod to work on any computer except my friends, whereas for my Zen it's as simple as downloading the software for creative's site and plugging it in.
not sure about your stereo, it just has the headphone jack and usb jack. I'd assume that a headphone extension cord or something similar would work.

I've got the Ipod 1gig shuffle. I use it for work. It fits great in my pocket, and I don't have to worry about f*****g up a display screen while its in my pocket. Good enough battery life for what I need. I also bought the belkin FM transmitter, so I can play it @ home or in the car w/ no problems.

i use only itunes for organizing / playing my music
i like how it works directly with itunes
also the shuffle isnt that much more expensive than a flash drive of the same size, so i cant complain

If you are a sheep then you definitely need an Ipod. I love the way the marketed the fact that the Ipod shuffle has no controls as a positive. Yes every flash player in the world has shuffle mode but ours is good since it is IMPOSSIBLE to play the sons in the order you want to "because life is random" LOL.
I have this one:
http://www.iriveramerica.com/prod/ultra/700/ifp_795.aspx
And I love it.
They just put out a firmware upgrade that makes it work exactly like a USB thumbdrive. You just plug it into your USB port and use it like a normal drive. Copy any kind of file to it or from it (before this you couldn't download songs from the player to your computer). No special software needed whatsoever, put any kind of files you want on it. Very small, but has all the features you oculd want including an FM tuner and voice recorder. Ownage.
Only bad thing is the little joystick thing is hard to use while I'm riding my bike but not terrible.
You don't need 20G of music on a portable player good lord. I have a hard time picking out 100 songs to put in this one and you can go for hours without hearing the same song twice. If I had 20G worth of MP3s in my playlist I guarantee there's stuff in there that I don't like that much.

I have 9 gigs filled on my 15G. It's fun to hook up the iPod to someone's stereo and have virtually any song you want. Or even in the car for long trips. Also doubles as a portable HD, can't complain. Whether you get an iPod or another mp3 HD player, it's all the same shit minus the design.
