I'm trying to find a mp3 player thats small enough that it won't be a hassle when I'm running, but has good enough quality that music sounds good while studying/traveling.
Price range anything up to $500, and I've got good ears and listen to music all the time so quality is an issue.
Thanks in advance

dude just walk into radio shack and get a cheap 128Mb $49 mp3 player.. if you want it to work out with
IT'S GOING TO GET BEAT UP
Don't waste money on a piece of electronics that is GOING to get trashed within a year... from getting tossed around in your gym bag to dropping it while doing stuff.. and that's in a gym.. imagine running along and god forbid it falls from waist height. You say that it wont and you are going to be careful but it doesn't work that way. It just doesn't.
I bought this little iRock thingy for the gym.. I've never been happier. Yeah it's not the best sound and the memory is weak but shit.. even a $49 piece of crap has taken a massive beating to it.. the lcd is cracked the battery compartment is missing the door, one of the buttons popped off.. if this had been an iPod I would have been kicking myself in the ass over it.
So yeah.. plenty of reasons to not go for the latest and greatest. As for sound quality.. that's a s****y excuse.. there isnt THAT much of a difference. We aren't talking about 8-tracks here for god's sake.. digital to digital I'm sorry but the difference isn't big enough (at least for me) to insist on carrying an iPod into the gym or on the track.

Those little memory based mp3 players have no moving parts, so they can take a beating. I-Pod is a hard drive right? I'm sure it's well packaged, but hard drives are pretty fragile if you start dropping them on the asphalt. I doubt sound quality will be much different between the two, but the I-pod has a whole lot more space on it.

True. The IRiver is expensive but has proven to be a very tough MP3 Player.
Why did I buy it?
Not because of the sound quality (which is great) or being the cool guy sporting the latest greatest gizmo.. but for the following:
I run 3-5 miles three times a week. I do plenty of push up, sit up and crunch reps on those three days. I ruck march (hike with a heavy back pack) once a week about 3 miles. I lift 30 minutes and use a cross trainer 30 minutes once a week too.
AND.. UGH.. Since I just got three new lard asses in my unit, I am running them twice a day three days a week to get them back in shape. They either shape up, break or they will be afforded the opportunity to seek better employment elsewhere.
So I wanted an MP3 player that was small, light, plenty of storage, no moving parts, and a decent battery life. The IRiver was a good fit.
Dimension Approx. 91 x 35 x 26.7 mm (its tiny)
Weight Approx. 35g(Excl. battery) (its weightless)
Memory: 512MB Flash Memory (Room for music folders to run, ruck and lift too)
Playback Hours: Approx. 24 hrs (AA Battery 1EA, 128 kbps MP3, Vol 20) 20 - 25 is right about where I keep it.
Additionaly: Voice Recording (Have you ever sat through a 400 level class taught by a West Point Professor?)

I got the wrap around head set, they are nice, ear buds are teh suck.
You'll like the system. The software is pretty easy to use too.
