I don't know about you, but I think buiding aim / yahoo / jabber support into an mmo would be awesome.
There is a political reason to do it, too. You could get people to drop MSN's s****y service simply by not supporting it.
"Well, I used to use MSN a lot (lol!) but I'm always playing this game, and it supports my Yahoo name, so I'm on that more often."
On the other hand, having an online buddy list in an MMO might detract from the immersion. What do you think?

Most people that would use AIM/Yahoo/MSN while playing an MMO would merely put the game in windowed mode and use the messenging program on the side. I think integrating instant messaging into the actual game would contribute to immersion.

I think AOL should die for stopping people from standardizing the IM clients so they could all talk to each other. I hate the "do you have AIM?" No I use Yahoo, but I have ICQ too!" "Damn I have MSN" blah blah blah. Sucks.

I think so, too, Devook. You could do this in-game:
/yim cuddlebunz42 hey what's up
And somewhere out there cuddlebunz42 would be using her normal Yahoo interface.
Also nice would be an IRC server. Or, even better, all "channels" in the game actually *are* IRC server channels. So if you have IRC access you can join guildchat.
It is probably a nightmare to implement though, what with the Yahoo and AIM protocols changing quite often, as well as the associated lag and server issues of IRC on it's own.

Trillian is the answer.

I'm not sure how difficult it would really be... I've been using the same version of Trillian for at least 6 months. If all you needed it for was sending/receiving basic test messages without the bells and whistles like msn poking and direct connect b******t, it probably wouldn't be that hard to maintain.

I've never used Trillian but I think it's open source. Not sure. It would be nice to be able to use their libraries.

Gaim is open-source.
I'm pretty sure Trillian isn't since they are trying to package and sell a "pro" version.

Yeah... the main concern is cost (in time) of upkeep and development. If Yahoo releases a weird new encrypted protocol and refuses to play nice, suddenly all your in-game Yahoo chat just got muted. The more I think about it, the more it's not worth it.
