I poking around the net tonight and I saw that EA announced yet another expansion to Ultima Online a month or so ago. I thought this game was dead and gone years ago. This led me to thinking, have any of the MMORPGs that have come out recently actually failed to make money and been shut down?

I know that the Realm(s) is still around, same with UO apparently. I believe AO and AC2 are still around as well. The first two are very old. I had thought the last two were pretty unsuccessful. Are any of them not around anymore?

That's impossible. If it went freelance someone would have revamped the engine.

The realm died.

There was orig a "The Realm" 2x. That was the main success, where levels were limited to 100, and characters were limited to human. There was also much less you could do with a character.

"The Realm" 3x was the 2nd mainstreem version, where they upped the levels to as high as you could reach (then a year or more later, decided to cap them at 1 or 2 thousand)

Anyway, Sierra was the creater and hoster of The Realm. when 3x went live (it was a different game entirely), they allowed 2x to run for another month or so, then shut that one down.

Then 3x ran well into the start of EQ. I believe 2 years after EQ began, Sierra shut down the project completely, and a new company picked it up.

It's still a 2D based graphical mud, but god damn was that game cool.

Codemasters runs The Realm dude. It still is alive, for $5 a month.

edit: upon closer inspection, Norseman Games picked it up and runs it now.

Earth and Beyond

I played that in beta. It was pretty crappy. Not sure what it was like by the time they finally released it. There were some elements of decent MMORPG stuff in it, but space sort of doesn't lend itself to a graphical MMORPG - there's just not enough graphics - you can only see so many explosions; other than that space is prety empty.

Earth and Beyond

I'd never heard of this one so I looked up their site. They are closing but are still running until September. That answers my question though. It seems that's the first one.

I played the free month thing of Earth and Beyond, it was actually a pretty fun game other than the fact there were like 10 people online at a time. Still I thought it was pretty fun.
