I got the key to that open beta thing (the stress test) off a friend, but now I can't access it. The page says "To use your Stress Test key, you'll need to create a Turbine account and download the Stress Test Client (3.7GB).", but the download link just doesn't work – it won't open neither in my browser nor in my download client. Any ideas?

What page are we talking about there, exactly? Would that be http://lotro.turbine.com/stresstest/, or maybe http://beta.lotro.com/? Judgiong form your post, I would assume it's the former, which is a mite strange, because … well, as far as I know the stress test is over and done with, and you're a little late to join in there. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please…
