What part are you having trouble with? If google searches are eluding you, try using the acronym LAMP. Some people use LAMP to talk about Linux Apache MySQL PHP configurations.

get the 2 to talk. PHP in most configurations already works with MySQl, but not MSSQL server.
Looks like i have to use http://www.freetds.org/ but I wanted to be sure.

The MSSQL extension is enabled by adding extension=php_mssql.dll to php.ini.
To get these functions to work, you have to compile PHP with --with-mssql[=DIR], where DIR is the FreeTDS install prefix. And FreeTDS should be compiled using --enable-msdblib.

I assumed most would know to get the 2 to talk was my question by the way since it's not part of normal PHP
I guess it wasnt so obvious

What do you mean by "get the two to talk"? I don't mean to sound like an ass, but what do you consider the difference between PHP using MySQL and PHP using the MySQL server, as you said?
It sounds like you need aboot 2-3 hours of reading.

there's a layer in between PHP and the database. if you are new to computers or programming you might have heard of ODBC in windows.
In this case, there's a layer missing to get PHP and MS SQL Server to talk where PHP already has this layer by default in current versions to talk to MYSQL.
I was asking the RP community if I was correct in thinking this. Which I was.
This means in order for me or anyone to get PHP to talk to a MS SQL Server, you have to install that layer, in which case, one of the choices is to grab http://www.freetds.org/

I was asking for help yes. I've never used Sql Server with linux.
and based off of Dunns response, he sounded like he had no idea that it even existed or could exist. so I was trying to educate him.
and that's wrong?
I downloaded the link i pasted and it works fine.

Dunn = talking about MySQL
