A friend of mine plays Lineage 2. I always wanted to try it and maybe join him, but unfortunately this was not possible with Lineage 2. However I have heard there is a trial available right now but I could not find it where it was. Is this trial still available and where to ask for it?

Unfortunately, I think you have just missed a trial promo from gamespot. However if you check regularly the official site, maybe there will be another trial. Also, check this out maybe they will reopen the trial at the gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/event/codes/lineage-2-trial. And why dont you ask your friend to lend you user/pass to try out the game?
