So, um, how does this work, exactly? Just curious, really, because recently I heard about people who do this for a living – I mean play the game round the clock, 24/7 (with breaks, I suppose), and they do it not for, you know, fun … but instead to earn game money which they then sell for real money? How's that even possible, and who does that!?

Ah, welcome finally to the enchanting world of massive multiplayer online role playing.
Yes, what you describe is indeed going on, and all the time actually. You've got these "farmers" – in L2 they're mostly Koreans – who work at the game non-stop, just getting loot and selling it on e-bay or whatever. Apparently, it's enough to cover the expenses of playing and make a small profit. Go figure.
