I've never played L2 before, but I hear it's popular… and the, recently, I hear it has a non-standard death penalty: When you get ganked, you drop some of your items, irretrievably! Is this true? If it is, I'm very surprised to see that it appears to be accepted by the fan base, I would assume people would complain?

It's actually a bit more complicated then that, but yes, you did get the gist of it. The chance to drop gear on death is variable: For example, In PvP play, whether or not you drop something when killed depends on the number of PKs you have (both total and in that session, I think).
