I'm considering starting a human wizard, most probably a warlock (arcana lord) as my first character. Would you say this is an OK choice for a newbie? Keep in mind that I have plenty of experience playing offensive-minded casters in RPGs (I hardly play anything else). Anything I should pay special attention to?

Well, experienced or not, warlock is a fairly easy class to play – easy as in straightforward to learn, of course. You summon big cats – they do stuff for you. You use them and healing via the Transfer Pain trick. You focus on Int, through later on the focus moves more to Wit and Men. On the downside, you're kind of slow, but there are potions for that.
