USA PATRIOT ACT
The sweeping anti-terrorism law adopted Oct. 26, 2001.
Expands the FBI's power to conduct secret searches of private property or homes without informing the owner.
Expands FBI access to private records held by a third party, such as credit reports, student records, medical records, financial information.
Allows the FBI to conduct secret searches or wiretap s on U.S. citizens to obtain evidence of crimes without showing "probable cause."
Expands an exception to the 4th Amendment for spying that collects information about the origin and destination of communications. This exception, when applied to Internet usage, allows access to far more private detail s than when applied to traditional communication methods like telephones or regular mail.

This is another issue that is not "black and white". The act did allow some major arrests to take place to gather information. However, the act does allow a lot of room for abuse. Keep in mind that the Congress makes the laws and is about 50/50 between the parties. Both parties are equally responsible for this. The Supreme Court, which was being labelled as "Republican stooges" in 2000 by some people, did its job now like it did its job back then.

It wasn't the supreme court, d*****t. It was a federal district court. The supreme court actually already held up the patriot act. So...what's that about you being right again?

Hmm, it appears that it was a district court... Central District of California, US District Court with the ruling coming from U.S. District Judge Audrey Collins. I cant find any Supreme Court rulings on the Patriot Act. They can only rule if one of the lower courts tries a case involving the act, so we may see something come from the Supreme Court.
