Been playing EQ2 for 2 months:
Leveled two chars 20+ (scout and healer)
couple other experiments between lvl 6-12
Have made them all on the same green server marked "Light" load...
my problem:
Everyone I've grouped with has wreaked of noob. Occasionally I'll get some people that know what's up, but most of the time I'm wracking up nice wads of debt from people just sucking ass. For exp I mostly solo or duo with my one friend from RL who plays with me... but there's alot of the game that requires you to group up and generally that part becomes a huge hassle given the available players on Steamfont... lately we've both been considering biting the bullet and switching servers...
My question i.e. input needed:
How bad is it on the "Heavy" load servers? Overpriced shit? Rampant bot farming? Basically I'm not looking for high-end hardcore uber 24/7 raiding shit, I plan on taking my time leveling and exploring and have been enjoying the tradeskills, even after the patch. (I actually like it better not having to depend on overpriced player-made components)
I'd just like to play on a server with people that did the EQ1 thing and understand basic concepts like how to move your avatar from Point A to Point B without running into large model giants. However I'm hesitant to abandon the work I've done on Steamfont if the red servers are wastelands of lootwhores and cocksuckers. Not that I wouldn't fit in with that crowd, but the point being is I'm wondering if the red servers are so overcrowded that basic neccessities like Combat Art / Spell Scrolls are gonna require me to use my Visa card instead of just farming & selling to vendors like I do now.
Right now I pay between 15silver - 1gold for Adept I books for the teen levels and between 50silver-3gold for Adept I books for the 20s... how does that compare to prices elsewhere?
Right now I'm leaning towards playing on Guk, seems like a lot of TM rejects have flocked there. Unrest, Mistmoore or Runneye seem to have a good population too. I enjoyed learning the game on the green server, but I feel like the small size and small population are eventually going to close-in on me here and drive me nuts.
Any input appreciated. Thanks for reading the rambling. Might just stay on Steamfont but am feeling so frustrated already after last night's 20% exp debt acquired while trying to hunt quest mobs in the griffon valley of thundering steppes. (And that 20% is after shard recovery / rezzes... worst case was in Stormhold where I made it to 40% debt even after getting my shard(s))

Heavy population
Medium population
Light population

Answer (When I played): Heavy populated servers is just more noobs but consolidated into more packets of cluster f**k.

i'm on heavy, and at 29 i'm grouping with pretty decent people, of course i'll run into the occasional noob every now and then, but ti doesn't ruin the group or game for me.

I currently play on Unrest as with alot of old TM people. I know ED is on Unrest as well. There are alot of nice higher end guilds on the server esp now that Ebonlore is gone.
As for the prices, they are not all that bad. Some stuff is high, but I think you are going to run into that anywhere you go with people being greedy and plain ass dumb as hell.

Unrest is a nice server for you to try, I'm liking it there as well compared with some of the others I've tried. Neriak's another good one as well to try.

Najena is fine. Very high pop, but as most people said, you get out of the 20's and into the 30's typically the suckier people have been blacklisted (group exp debt is nice in that sense).
As for economies and such, every server is a bit fluxy right now due to the attunement and tradeskill changes. But I started about 2-3 months after the game was out on Najena and had no problems (although i did have some help from friends). But even on my own i've made a very good portion of gold, and did trades to get things like my PGT done.
Quest stuff like Stiletto's Orders, and rare Harvests are great sellers on every server from what i've seen.
